Flash drives, data sticks, memory sticks, USB drives, jump drives...it seems that even today, no one name is predominating.

I tend to call them flash drives, although lately I've been using "USB drive" because it seems more logical and less confusing

USB disk.

Mostly because I saw it in a device name, or something.

Weighted Storage Cube Dispenser
Cake Slice
Flash Stick, for the type of memory circuit, USB drive, since they're small HD's that are USB-powered, and External Drives, if they are the latter with their own power supplies.

For small solid-state drives, "flash drive".
For external SDcard/memstick readers regardless of size, "card reader".
For external hard disk drives and external solid-state drives meant for use as a hard drive, "external drive".

I prefer the term "flash drives" for the small ones you plug into your computer, "card readers" for anything that reads various types of memory cards, and "external hard drive" is pretty self-explanatory

Pieces of plastic I hurl around at people.

I mean, I call them Flash Drives.

Although I also often refer to that in tandem with 'Sneakernet protocol' considering what they're useful for.

Ah, I forgot about Sneakernet!

I don't know, I call them either flash drives or USB drives. I hate calling them 'jumpdrives.'

Man, I should use Sneakernet more often. :p

USB drive, since the other names don't make much sense to me, least of all "jump drive". (Sounds like a sci-fi engine term. )

Flash stick, generally. Or USB key just because it's on my keyring. Sometimes I make up fancy-sounding names.

In high school one guy called it an M Drive because for some reason Windows would mount it at M:\ every time.

Was Jump Drive a brand name, or just something people came up with?

Yeah, my father would refer to old-style large floppy drives as "B drives" I guess because for a while, it was common for a small floppy drive to be A and a large one to be B, making it hard to copy disks

Paulguy's Post configuration
USB/flash drive/disk in any combination.

[type of card] card reader

External hard drive

Nothing weird or fancy. I also can't recall any interesting names from other people. either.

Peardian was correct. :p

I call them USB sticks. Not that we've ever had one over 512 mb before.

I always did think Jump Drive sounded more like a FTL engine than a USB memory device.

** switch disks **
xcopy C:\temp\*.* A:\
deltree C:\temp
What's hard about that?

I had a 486 with one of those that always made such interesting noises as it powered up and checked everything.

USB drive or flash drive—whichever comes to mind first.

Well, I mean that if you were copying 1 disk to another of the same size, you couldn't do that unattended anymore; you had to switch disks in the middle instead.

I still remember taking files to high school using floppy disks. Now with college I E-mail myself the file, use a USB drive, or just use my laptop directly

Flash drives.

I also refer to them as "A" "B" "C" and "D" because I have four of them

...Now I want to pull out both of my 386 PCs just to do that. Isn't nostalgia great?

Back on topic, I call 'em flash drives. The term "USB drive" suggests data storage requiring a USB port, and could refer to flash or magnetic storage (including USB floppy disk drives). The term "jump drive" sounds like a sci-fi spaceship term. "Thumb drive" sounds stupid.

To me, a USB drive is an external hard drive which connects through USB. All the other names are just stupid IMO.
