Article here.

Basically, a Nigerian man with possible ties to Al-Qaida smuggled an explosive onto a plane flying from Amsterdam to Detroit and tried to blow it up as it landed. Thankfully, he failed.

I'm worried about the ramifications to airport security after this, like with 9-11. When the US government implements draconian regulations and holds up fliers for long periods of time, treating everyone who goes onto an airplane like a criminal, the terrorists have won.

What bothers me is that why did he even get through the sensors in the first place?

Glad to hear that people on the plane stood up to this guy instead of being so passive.

Indeed. Fortunately nobody got seriously injured.

I am sort of afraid to go flying because of all of this. :< Maybe a train would be safer?

Record-wise, trains are far more dangerous.

The plane crashes are far fewer than that of land vehicles, or boats. If anything, these incidents are in the extreme minority for flying, and if the terrorists remain like this and the passengers are no longer 9/11 style passive, there is little chance of them succeeding.

I do love the new rule for international flights heading to the US, where you CANNOT get up during the last hour of the flight and you CANNOT have anything on your lap.

And this helps HOW?!?

It stops passengers from attacking potential terrorists.

...Nobody ever said these regulations were well thought out.

So great, a man attempts to firecracker his balls off on an airplane, and now we're not allowed electronics on planes?

I think I'll go insane without a laptop or a DS or an iPhone or an....

Can we say "overreacting", boys and girls?

Obviously someone cocked up on the initial security check. You don't let person X bring on juice but you let person Y come on with an explosive mix?

Record-wise, it's safer to take the airplane then to take a bath in your own bath tube while being home alone. :/

Train is in fact very low too... Cars on the other hand is the most dangerous thing you can travel in (If you look on planes, ships, trains and cars.)

I do agree that cars can be far more dangerous than trains or airplanes... especially since you almost never hear about DUI in Europe, unlike here in the USA

But still, it's a good thing that they caught him early, otherwise we would've had even more regulations placed on our airlines

Still, I think they're too strict in some respects... why can't we bring water or shampoo bottles on an airplane? That's ridiculous...

Because you'll somehow drown people in water, or make them blind with the shampoo.

Yeah, all of them. At the same time.

Because someone could easily replace all the drink/shampoo with an explosive liquid. It's even harder to notice with shampoo bottles, since many of them are opaque.

I think Americans are paranoid about the terrorists. If electronics are banned on flights or such harsh measures such as not standing up during the last hour are implemented, then we can say the terrorists have won.

The best part of all this is that he got through because people weren't doing their jobs. Not because the system is broken, but because the people running the system are broken. There were multiple, obvious warning signs (including the guy's dad himself telling the CIA that his son was an extremist), all of which were ignored.

Somebody just dismantle the frickin' TSA already and put some people in charge who know what the hell they're doing. This has gone far beyond ridiculous.

No fucking kidding. Not to mention he was on a watch list, but still got onto the plane with a bomb.
