Anyone else really like them?

They use less power, so you can string more in a row and save on your electric bill, and I like the colours, especially the blue and white. Old-style white lights look incredibly yellow in comparison. Plus I like the coloured circles they leave on walls and such

Any other types of lights that people love or hate? I sometimes like those rope lights that were popular a few years ago around here, and the transparent-bulb versions of C7 or C9 lights (although I wouldn't use them myself, probably).

I love them... they came with my small Christmas tree that I bought this year

Too bad they're only white though... would've been cool to have multicolored lights... but maybe next year I will

I definitely prefer multicoloured lights, which is what we always had For best results, string them with silver garland and it will sparkle many colours.

Haven't seen any of those, actually... We just have indoor lights. Saves trouble especially since we'd need to use a ladder to get to the window outside...

Lain's post №313

Oh yes.

Less power, more light.

Although I still would rather use 'normal' white lights on indoor Christmas trees. I just like the warm light that comes from them. :p

I also only put lights inside, as I live in a high-rise with no balcony for my apartment, but my parents put stuff on the outside of their house. They have even made wood carvings and painted them.

I only have lights up in one window this year... a rather old set my mom used to use, too

I'm thinking about buying more LED Christmas lights next year

Pros:

• Colors that never fade or scratch off
• Way more light output relative to power use

Cons:

• Seizure-inducing 60Hz blinking
• Blue, purple, and sometimes green lights are unpleasant if not downright annoying
• Different manufacturers use electrically and physically incompatible bulbs

All in all, they're nice, but they have definite disadvantages. I'd like to see those issues worked on before I replace my boxful of mini-lights.

Aren't they also supposed to have a significantly longer lifespan than regular light bulbs?

I bought a box of them almost a year back. Not for Christmas, but to string in my room for no apparent reason. They're still in the box, because I'm lazy.

I notice a slight strobe effect, but it's by no means, you know, seizure-inducing.

Paulguy's Post configuration
The flicker drives me nuts (Fixable, if they wanted to) but I like everything else about them. I think if they tried, they could make a filter that produces the same "warmth" from them as the incandescent ones do.

Eh, I'm not so sure. I guess I just like the old style lights even if the LEDs are supposedly "better". One of the houses in our neighborhood has some of them and they are incredibly bright compared to normal lights, almost to an annoyingly bright point.

I didn't even know they had those.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised, though.

My family is slowly converting to LED lights, mainly because we're dirt poor and can't afford to replace them all at once.

You can apparently buy some that have 'soft white' light, similar to old Christmas lights, but I'm not sure just how similar it is. The ones I've seen have been bright almost-blueish white. I have a set that rotates through being white or blue and fades back and forth, so the blueishness of the white isn't as strange. I like that they don't give off much heat at all. I just hope that they come out with some that have a similar shape to the mini-lights of old, because they're cute. We're supposedly changing to LEDs for the big tree in the house, because replacing the dead bulbs was going to cost >$90 anyway, but I don't know if we'll do it any time soon. My SO's mother has enough Christmas stuff to open a store, so she has enough lights lying around to use anyway. It would feel kind of stupid to go out and buy new lights at this point.

I hate driving and seeing houses that have a combination of old lights and LEDs strung in succession, as if they're the same things, but the colours are completely off. It looks really strange, and it's distracting. :<

Mine don't seem to have these problems. Maybe I just don't notice the flicker (sure as hell notice it on a CRT), but they don't bother me at all. I don't know what this is about incompatible bulbs - they last long enough and are durable enough that there's no need to replace them, and I've never even seen an LED string with replaceable bulbs.

I have 8 strings, software-controlled through solid-state relays, that I use for mood lighting and trippy rave effects (synchronized to mplayer). They're great for lighting up at night when regular lighting is too bright; it's just enough to see. Then I can sync up a Wiimote and switch them on and off from wherever. It's quite awesome.

I guess you just happen to have more reliable ones than I do. Mine need replacement bulbs (mostly green), and there's no way to fix it. (Lucky me, the ones I have aren't the replaceable kind. ) Plus, being able to replace bulbs also means being able to rearrange the colors so that five multicolor strings can become five single-color strings.

Or rearranging them, like with the C7 and C9 lights. Light strings tend to follow a regular pattern rather than being random like I think they should be.
