This was going to go into the computer on/off thread as it derailed a bit, but I decided to make a new thread for it instead.
If you emulate, when and why do you use save-states, if any? Like, do you cheat with them or just use them to pick up where you left off, or rely on saves the system could do (battery/memory card etc.) only?
I remember a lot more SNES games having battery saves relative to the number of NES games with them, but often they wouldn't save everything, which was annoying in games like Yoshi's Island when I had like 75 lives and had to go to school right before some tough level, then when I loaded the save I was back down to 3 lives. So I tend to use save-states to save my progress to keep everything like the score and lives intact, plus I don't have to reach an in-game save point if I suddenly have to stop playing.
I also use them to avoid passwords in games. Yes, Faxanadu, I mean you. Mixed-case alphanumeric passwords in such a confusing font* Plus with passwords, copying one down wrong can cost you progress, and you may not be sure if you entered it in wrong when loading the game or copied it down wrong while saving, and pieces of paper can get lost.
And some games, even long ones like the NES SMB3, have no saving system at all.
I don't use save states to cheat usually anymore, although I used to do that a lot. One situation in which I did use them was when trying to beat the NES Lone Ranger, which is probably about on the level of Kaizo Mario World (and yes, it was a real cartridge). Even with save states, it was damn tough.
*H looked like N, and I would joke that the shopkeepers said "Nello" when greeting the player.

Yes, I use them, pretty many times. I use at least 3 save state slots most time (mainly I play SNES games, so I can save and load fast). That doesn't mean, that I'm saving in every second, and beating perfectly unharmed the game, just liking to have some different save places. However, I guess I could beat the games without savestates too (except Megaman), but it wouldn't be that fun. I'm not that patient time, and yeah...I'd need more time for games, and I want to beat so many games. But...I don't have that much time for playing, so I don't want to start levels all over again.

I use them at particularly awesome points in the game.
You know, the usual awesome boss fight and whatnot. For example, a one-time fight with a giant robot.
Also when I am trying things that I would normally just soft-reset in. It saves a lot of time I can use for you know, actually playing the game.

This user's save state usage varies by mood, attitude, game, e-t-c.
A case of no save states: Call me badass because I've played this game before off the PC, I should try to avoiid using them
A case of few save states: That's another level completed, lemme just save here and load if I mess it up
A case of some number of save states: Ok, I just want to beat the game, OK? Instead of dying all the time. Here's a safe spot, I'll save here...
A case of several save states: Enemy killed with no damage, save state. Took damage, load state. Killed enemy--oh wait, grenade got me. Load state.
A case of many save states: Save state, kill enemy using Frame Advance. If no item drops, load state, advance one frame, save state, do it again.
Also this scenario: Save state, muck around a bit (the reason for doing this varies), load state when I'm done / mess up

If it's an extremely unfair game difficulty-wise, I might end up using them more often... but generally I'll use them to save progress.

 | I use save states to save my progress if I have to quickly shut down a game for some reason. If I'm not in a rush to finish playing then I'll usually just keep playing until I reach the next in-game save point (unless there aren't any, then I'll usually just make a save state on the map screen/in between levels).

^This.
Or if I'm playing a game very casually.
Some times in RPGs I use a save state in case I want to go a long way to check something and if it turns out it was nothing/not worth it/can't do it yet then I reload the state to save the backtracking. Walking in RPGs tends to take quite some time...

Paulguy's Post configuration
I pretty much suck at games, so I tend to have to use them a lot, but I try not to. I tend to be careful, though. I dislike watching a let's play where the person just totally save-spams, but makes absolutely ridiculous mistakes just because they can reload to 2 seconds prior, and end up taking more time than they should.
For RPGs and stuff, I just use them along with the ingame save system, yknow, just in case. Also, to skip stupid cutscenes before bosses and whatnot.
