I mean, really, reform would give us scary 6-hour waiting lines in the emergency room!

Baby Angel Nicole Dewberry died within minutes of being born breech and premature last week. Twenty-five-year-old Roshunda Abney and her fiancé apparently didn't know she was pregnant when she went into premature labor.

Victoria Taylor sat next to the couple for six hours in UMC's emergency room. Taylor says Abney's distress was obvious, "We begged and I screamed from across the room for them to take her in," she said.

Taylor, who never met the couple before that night, says one hospital employee was callous, even threatening. "His sarcastic arrogance," she said. "He even threatened me and said that if I spoke up again, I'd be thrown out."

After six hours, Abney and her fiancé reportedly walked to nearby Valley Hospital to try and seek treatment before eventually returning home. Minutes later, the baby was born.

Angel Dewberry was pronounced dead less than an hour later back at UMC.

"This is an example of our health care system's failure to provide even the most basic and fundamental care," said attorney Jacob Hafter.

Oh wait.

Outside of the political angle, this is just ffffffffffffffffffffffffffff.

Sigh. This is the kind of sad shit that just should. not. happen.

Wow, what the fuck. How the hell can people be so heartless that they'll deny a pregnant woman with a premature birth on the way immediate access to emergency medical care? That's absolutely fucking ridiculous. Holy shit.

There are so many things wrong with this that I don't even know where to start. Jesus christ.

Don't you guys have the worst life expectancy of all the Western Countries because of horribly lacking and accessible health care, or have I been grossly misinformed?

This is ridiculous.

Health care should be a basic right for all humans. It shouldn't be reserved for only the rich.

I feel the same way about food, shelter, and jobs. Everyone should have a right to them rather than having to compete.

I'd rather pay high taxes for universal health care than have to spend a ton for health insurance, to be honest...

After all, many European countries, such as Sweden, have universal health care

As a small (but not really redeeming) note, the woman wasn't aware she was pregnant.

I have health care and I'm not rich. In fact I have one dollar to my name right now. So yea, something happens, I'm fucked. If I didn't have insurance, my asthma would be out of control and I'm not sure what would happen then. I was without for a few months when I lost my job and after awhile it started to get bad.

ER's blow. I've been a few times (asthma and then for a cut finger) and had to wait. If I have an emergency, I rather drive across the street to the little medical facility that they have there. Went there for my allergic reaction and I didn't have to wait long and the people were nice.

Father-in-law went there when his toe was smashed in a door on his friend's boat. Good service as well.

And how do you not know that you're pregnant unless you don't get your period at all?

*181553 @Revya> it's like the only angle anybody can focus on is "HOW DID SHE NOT KNWO SHE WAS PREGO"

My aunt is one person who still gets periods even while pregnant (or so I heard). Apparently it's not entirely that uncommon.

I knew somebody that didn't know they were pregnant, and they still had their period the entire time. It's definitely possible. I also know someone who works in a hospital, and they have seen this on many more occasions.

Anyway, I'm still pissed at our health care system for sticking my grandma with a $60,000 hospital bill for her last hospital visit. She's spent her whole life paying on Anthem/Bluecross health insurance which is supposed to be some of the best out there, and when it came down to the crunch, they wouldn't pay a dime since the hospital stuck her in a private room. What the fuck do we pay these stupid insurance companies for if they are never there when you need them?! Not to mention that the hospital was all too happy to bring in every doctor that they could possibly find when 90% of them weren't even needed, making sure that each one was OUT OF THE NETWORK, and they kept her as long as possible to further jack up the bill. Fuck the U.S. Healthcare system. My step-grandfather has had to retire early losing what insurance he has, move back home with my grandma to take care of her, and will probably have to declare bankruptcy now in order to pay for this, all while still having to worry about how to pay for all of her medication without health insurance.

On the "not knowing i'm preggo" situation, there's a lot of people in the UK who have had this problem, and there was a documentary about it. Some women still get their periods during pregnancy, some women don't even have the baby showing and others have no signs of pregnancy until the waters break.

I can't really say anything on the reform since in the UK we have, albeit not perfect, a great healthcare system. We don't have to pay for health insurance, we get free medical care which we pay for through taxes, which is a great system. The only downside I can see is that non-emergencies, such as future operations you are having and having non-urgent transplants, have a very long waiting list (you can take up to a year or more just to get an operation done on you). I don't see why america can't switch to this, or even just removing bills on certain age groups / social class individuals (which the UK does with prescription charges, the elderly, unemployed and school-aged children are exempt from fees). It would save a lot of hassle and worry over the current system.

Our social studies class was shown a documentary of the health insurance companies in Michigan, I believe, and there were a lot of cases where people performed self surgery on themselves for things like deep cuts, stitches, broken bones in order to avoid paying fees. It was very depressing to watch, sometimes I'm thankful I live here. May not be the best of areas, but atleast I can rely on getting treated without having to part with my life savings.

There's a show on either Discovery Health or TLC, I can't remember which, which is called "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant" where even itty-bitty women will be 7 months pregnant and not even have the tiniest bulge or lose their periods. It's a bit freaky, honestly!

Anyway, not only does the system of paying for health care need to change but also the attitudes of doctors. Here in Oregon there are nothing but assholes who undermine everybody and lord their PhDs over the heads of their patients and I think that you should be able to call it harassment! Sorry buddy, just because daddy helped bribe your way into med school doesn't mean you're a better person than us!

No shit. Every doctor I've ever met has been a complete asshole who made it obvious that he/she didn't care about your well-being at all, and only cared about money. They don't even bother to listen to you, and they talk so condescendingly that I want to punch them in the face.

Let me just say that things like this may still happen even if reform does come along, because doctors can be big dickwads. Uhmmm... yeah, I know for sure that this weird feeling I'm having along with a 106 degree fever is death. Stop telling me I have a bad flu and to just rest at home.

I agree. When I was younger, I had a very bad ear infection in which caused me to scream in pain for well over three hours. After this I was sent to the Emergency room and found out I had one of those cysts in my ear.

Mom went to court and basically the entire bill was free. The doctor's office had to pay for it.

Doctors nowadays care about money more then they do passion. Like my orthodonist: I had braces in my mouth for well over three years, and I had a cavity on my wisdom tooth, and my back molor...mind you the back molar had a huge metal bracket preventing any food from getting into it.

THey did not use proper cleaning procedures when removing and replacing my braces. And guess what?

The Orthodonist I had is now currently in jail for fraud! Yeah! Dumbass filed for bankruptcy with rolex watches and a 67 Pourch in his garage!~

I really hate doctors

Here's how it works, they never tell you what is actually wrong with you, they just give you a bunch of prescriptions that you don't need so you can pay to have them all filled, and then they charge you an arm and a leg for a useless visit. I swear every single time I go to the doctor its the same story:

Doctor: *throws door open while barging in loudly
Doctor: (in a rushed, mumbled, I don't care voice) So what are your symptoms?
Me: "Well, I started getting a sore throat about two day ago..."
Doctor: (in a tone like why am I wasting his time) "Oh thats a virus. Nothing we can do. I'll write you out a bunch of prescriptions to treat typical flu symptoms kthxbye
Doctor: *Slams door, and makes me wait an additional hour and a half for a prescription that I won't even fill

This is why anymore if I think there is something wrong with me, I just go to urgent care rather than an actual family doctor. At least there I can get a freakin' diagnosis A few years ago my sister got the above doctor treatment at one of her visits. Turns out she actually had mono, and later had to be rushed to the ER when she couldn't breathe! I fucking hate doctors.

I have had an earache for nearly the last two years. Even a SPECIALIST told me he "couldn't see anything wrong." No kidding? All he did was stick a flashlight in my ear like every other doctor did, and basically suggest taking an OTC painkiller! On top of that, the douchebag tried to charge me something like $100 for each of the two visits I paid him. Of course, I called and protested this, stating that he wasn't even doing anything to help me, my ear still hurt as bad as ever, and was basically told that I "pay for the advice, not for the cure." What advice? And what the bloody hell am I supposed to do with advice, anyway? Take it to another doctor?

Prescription. I wish. Ha ha ha.

That was in a hospital in Brooklyn where that went down, I remember that incident...

True story, I went to Elmhurst hellspital last June cause I had a fever of 102 degrees. I went into the ER & they're telling me to have a seat the doctor will see me shortly, this was at 3am and I didn't get seen until 9am with a fucking high fever! When I thought I was gonna see a doctor, they bring me into a room with a bunch 'a beds where people were lying down and told me lay down that the doctor will see me shortly.

From 9am to 2pm STILL waiting to see a doctor the nurse comes around to ask if I'm ok, I blacked out at her saying what time I came to the hospital with a 102 degree fever and I'm fucking shaking with this thin ass sheet!!1 When I said that I wanna see the Administrator the ER staff took care of me asap like if I never waited all those fucking hours. That was the same day I found out I have Colitis...

If I get deathly ill, with my lack of money, I'm probably best off going on a crime spree--

They might bother to keep me alive long enough to see trial, while with my lack of money or healthcare, I might as well kiss my life goodbye otherwise.
