So I just bought an iPhone 3GS today. I paid a shitload for it because it's unlocked (I have no choice if I want to use it here). It's very nice and works great, except for...

...thanks to iTunes I can't download any applications. Great job Apple. :specialed:

The account creation process wanted my name, my address, billing info and just about everything that it could possibly ask for. Of course, it doesn't work in my country because there is no version of the iTunes Store for a country with 28k people in it.

There's a workaround that lets me create an account without billing info, but of course they still want everything else. How about no, Apple?

Hi jailbreak!

Let me get this story straight...

You bought an unofficially modded product that was originally not supported in your country, and you expect the company behind the aforementioned product to support it anyway?

Really?

TRS has a point. The assumption must be that if you want an unlocked iphone because your country doesn't support it you must have some knowledge of how to get around that problem when it comes to actually using it for stuff.

It's not modded, it's a factory unlocked model which came that way from Apple - hence why I'm having so much trouble. If it was jailbroken I could just install pirated apps. Of course, I guess I have no choice but to jailbreak it myself in order to use it properly!

Oh so you're saying that you bought it unlocked directly from Apple? In that case then yeah I agree, that's dumb. Why not provide support for all the nations. Hell, it's not hard to send billing information. :|

Yeah - I didn't buy it directly from Apple, but it came that way. (The store used to offer unofficially unlocked ones which were cheaper, but people were having problems with them and weren't selling them any more.)

It works perfectly other than the store problems. It's not really an issue for the other parts of the store, but for apps it's quite a big problem as I can't get them elsewhere.

I can't even make an account, so I can't download free apps. Why do I need to give them all my information for that anyway?

Apple is ridiculous... I started to boycott them because they can be a rip off, what with iTunes and their ridiculously high prices

They were much better in the 1980s and 1990s, before the iPod, iPhone, iTunes, etc... also, the iPod line sucks for not supporting OGG or FLAC audio.

For me, the golden age of Apple is, and always will be, the System 7 days, as well as the Apple IIgs

Show me a company that actually can provide support for a product like the iPhone in every single country in the world. :/ Apple has a long reach but they can't cover 100% of everywhere ($$$.)

However I do agree that they ask for a lot of information. They would probably offer "free app only" accounts or something except that it would require a substantial rewrite of the whole account system, or a similar herculean effort on their part.

Also ... you can lie in the registration fields and it will work. If they're not physically shipping anything to you, then find a random American address and enter that or something.

Yeah, I can understand not selling stuff here (although it'd be annoying) - but if I can't even download free apps, that's just ridiculous. I wanted to jailbreak it anyway, but this is just annoying me.

Eh, buying Apple iPhones, iPods, or so on is just asking to get a fragile piece of junk that requires replacing every year.

I prefer to buy off-name things which have 3x the features and 1/2 the stupid.

uh what. I never got this, or the people that somehow break their iPods etc by dropping them on the carpet etc. I had an oooold old old iPod nano, 2 gig. It lasted me from when I was 15 up until a few months ago--almost 6 years, and the ONLY reason it died was because I was a dumbass and washed it in my pants. Even then the thing still worked! The battery was just shot. I've also never had any issues with my iPhone being super fragile. I've dropped it plenty of times, granted its got a shell on it but there's hardly even a scratch on the screen. So seriously...what?

So I entered fake info and made an account. I still can't get paid apps, but jailbreaking takes care of that.

Now I just have to find a decent package where I can actually -use- the phone for more than 5 minutes without 3G making me go bankrupt.

I just love the phone company here. I get to pay what's roughly the equivalent of $3.34 per megabyte I download! Fun right? That's also exactly why I need to find something better I can use.

iTunes is cheaper than actually buying the albums, and sells individual songs which is nice for people who don't really want to buy an album.

If you're going to jailbreak it, why are you complaining? It just seems like you want to whine about nothing which affects you anyway.

You can still get paid apps. Buy an iTunes giftcard from the country of your choice, there's tons of websites that will offer to help you out on this, you purchase it from them, they scan it in and give you the code to enter. You get credit and boom, paid apps. I do this to buy music from the Japanese iTunes store and its yet to fail me.

... I actually didn't think of that.

I think I'm probably going to end up jailbreaking it anyway though because I want to be able to use Backgrounder and themes and other such fancy things.

My iPod Video still works perfectly fine even after 4 years of having it. It's never failed me once.

I've got a 3GS. That's how I get on mostly.
Seriously, it's really tough. It's been dropped, knocked, sat on, even thrown against a wall, and not a scratch on it. It's awesome :3.
Treeki, a contract is best, as it gives you however many texts and minutes you want, and UNLIMITED internet. Yeah, unlimited. The one I'm on gives me 500 texts, 600 mins and unlimited internet for £35 a month.
Another thing about contracts is you get the thing a whole lot cheaper, but it seems like you already got it. Sorry 'bout that. '
