I noticed we were getting some comments about Reggie! and NSMBWii hacking. While we were hoping to keep a majority of it over at GBAtemp in Wii Hacking, we figured it was only a matter of time until people brought the conversation back here to our base of operations. We'll be happy to hear your comments or answer your questions.

Here's a little preview for your viewing pleasure:

Both are used in NSMBWii, but I'm not sure if the first release of the editor will support them. I'm also changing terms slightly to make it a bit easier to understand.

Lakitu doesn't seem to use Sprite Areas in NSMBWii, from what I've seen.

is this editor going to be completely different or will it be the same as the DS one? (easier to use?)

No, it will be completely new from scratch. Treeki is rewriting it in Python, so it will be cross-platform and small. The interface will be very similar to the DS editor.

It's not entirely similar - I've changed around a lot of the interface in the past few days, but it's a lot better now.

Right now it works something like a mix between Lunar Magic and the DS editor. You can pick an object or a sprite from a palette (the tabs at the right of the screenshot). Then, you can use the left mouse button to select/move/resize as usual, but you can also hold down the right mouse button and drag to paint objects/sprites.

It's kind of confusing to explain, but it's a really smooth system and it's very easy to make levels with once you get the hang of it.

It will run on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.

How will you load the game? Will it load in the ISO for the disk, or what?

Also, is there a wii emulator that works pretty good now?

Reggie needs the extracted level folder from the game, along with the tilesets (which are in a subfolder there).

Somewhat. Dolphin works but it's iffy and needs a really powerful computer; there are constant SVN updates which all change things. The latest SVN build is 4642 - I'm on 4631 and I get random freezes after a few minutes of playing.

Yeah, it's working somewhat better with 4642 though - almost seems like nsmbw is the only game the Dolphin guys are working on right now ;P Runs nearly perfectly with default settings AFAICT, maybe some trial'n error is needed in the DSP settings (using HLE plugin).
The game runs fullspeed* for me (Intel Core 2 Duo E8600, 3,16 GHz, 4GB RAM, ATI 3850), although you need to change framelimit from "auto" to 60 or 50 (PAL games should need 50, right?), otherwise the game only runs half-speed.

I do still get sporadic freezes as well though, but at a much lower frequency (once per world maybe).

* (using the OpenGL plugin, 1280x1024, 16xQ CSAA and 16x anisotropic, EFB to texture; disable fog gives a slight improvement in FPS, I have it enabled though)

I'm really excited about this; I have been since I saw it's original thread. You're doing a great job.

Have you developed a way to play custom levels on the Wii without piracy yet or is that lower priority for now?

Yes, it's in the works (not by me, but by other people on the Reggie team). It will work on any game, not just NSMBWii. It will require a homebrew-enabled Wii but no piracy will be required.

Will the loading method support USB Loading? (I have LEGAL Game Disc, I just prefer USB for convenience, I have all 30 of my games on it)

Also, would someone post a video of Reggie! in action please? We are ALL excited!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they already make that for custom skins for Brawl?

I had trouble making sense in this post; be wary.

Treeki, how is that system going to work? You say it will work for any game; what are they doing to generalize the concept of dumping custom level data over stock data in commercial games' RAM (I'm assuming that's how level editing will be done without requiring a hacked ISO)?

I've been thinking how sweet it would be to play NSMB Wii with friends online, but it occurred to me that a lot more hacking would have to be done to handle game menu syncing beyond simply syncing actual gameplay (which I would probably handle by simply passing lightweight packets consisting Wiimote input and X, Y and direction facing data).

The information needed to sync separate Wiis playing the game would be very specific to NSMB Wii, but I'd rather the design for adding online support to offline games be something more standardized such that the same idea could be easily applied to say, Boom Blox. If the Reggie team is doing anything similar to designing a non game specific system for overwriting varying memory locations (varying as finding the locations will likely require dereferencing several pointers) of varying lengths (the struct for a playable character's data in NSMB Wii is surely not going to be the same length as that of a playable character in some other Wii game, much less contain similar fields), then I'd hate to reinvent whatever they're doing for my purposes.

Of course, that assumes I'm even un-lazy enough to hook my Wii up to my PC with my USB Gecko and start reverse engineering Wii games again (I really should though; it was a $60 present and I've barely used it :/).
