Are there any artist/band names that you think are really dumb? This thread is about names that suck, not the bands themselves.

I don't like pointless numbers in band names. It's fine if it's the number of members (Four Seasons, Jackson 5) or an integral part of the name (3 Doors Down), but stuff like blink-182 or André 3000 look rather lame to me. I also think it's dumb when the whole name is a number, like 702. Can't you come up with a name other than your area code?

I also think most rapper names are dumb. Nelly, Chingy, Ja Rule, etc. And what's what all the "Lil"s? Lil Kim, Lil Jon, Lil Wayne, and so on.

The death metal tour posters that seem to pop up every week around here are always good for a few facepalms. I don't have any real examples at the moment, but they're always something obvious like THREE FEET OF BLOOD, BURIED ALIVE, AFTER THE [insert death-related word here], DROWNING IN FILTH, BLACK DEATH, THE FUNERAL, OUR DARKEST HOUR, and so forth. The sheer amount of black makeup at one of those concerts could probably drown an elephant.

I'm going to disregard that, and quietly disagree.

Hootie and the Blowfish get my spot for worst name ever. It just doesn't make any sense. Same with Chumbawumba.

A few of them might make sense. Lil Kim is short, and Lil Bow Wow started his musical career at a young age (I want to say 11). He dropped the Lil eventually and became Bow Wow.

A lot are still silly though, and it's so overused.

Also, bands named after the singer or another band member (such as Bon Jovi and Daughtry) strike me as unimaginative. They may work if the named member was succesful as a solo artist, but other than they they seem dumb to me. At least add something to the name, as in Dave Clark Five or Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

To be fair, they were simply always referred to as The Four Seasons on their albums, Frankie's name was never used outside of word of mouth. In fact, they were known as The Four Lovers before that, which could lead to another point if you're trying to talk about originality--not necessarily in their case but there's way too many bands that simply use the number of members as a naming gimmick. This has been known to backfire, such as in the case of Japanese pop unit Kanjani8. One member is currently on a bit of a career hiatus, leaving the group with a total of 7 members. Oops ;x
