Well as I detailed in the other thread, I now have a "brand new" laptop after the reformatting. So I've decided to take advantage of this fact and ask you all what sort of stuff I should go about putting on it. I've already got Avast for antivirus, mIRC for irc, and Firefox 2, but that's about all program wise that I didn't carry over from before the wipe. So yeah, suggest a few things to me.

Oh yeah, I need to reinstall MS Office. crap. At least I still have my CDs. Hopefully they work, otherwise it looks like I'll need OpenOffice fast.

openoffice is as good as m$ office (if not better!). you really should give it a try. it has a lot of compatibility with word documents and all that, you can export and import. I now have linux and win with openoffice only and i'm fine

Why Firefox 2? ... to each his own, I suppose.

Still, if there's a version of NoScript floating around for FF2, you should really grab it. It can be more useful than any anti-malware app, though of course there is no substitute for common sense.

If you've got bonafide MS Office, it will probably serve you *slightly* better than OpenOffice. Sometimes you get formatting anomalies when you open a file made in OpenOffice in MS Office, or you lose things like build animations in PowerPoint, etc. (But not usually.) Office 2003 and 2007 both run fine on W7 as does OpenOffice.

Note that if you do not want certain Windows components, such as Internet Explorer or Windows Media Player, you can now remove them (but some apps depend on IE being there, like when making a paypal purchase with Steam it tries to launch IE no matter what browser is default.)

As for other apps ... well ... it really depends on what you want to do. I always at least grab the GIMP and Audacity in case I need them (since neither is terribly large.) And I usually grab another browser like Opera in case something goes awry with Firefox and I don't have time to fix it.

Paulguy's Post configuration
CCCP, real alternative, quicltime alternative and/or VLC. May as well get all of them, since there will be some random video that'll work in one but not the other.

As for office apps, I've always kinda hated openoffice. It's just really slow for what it is/does. I've always been fond of office 2000, it has pretty much any feature you'd ever want, and it'll run on the absolute worst pieces of crap.

For IM in Windows, I liked Trillian, pidgin in windows has always been kinda sluggish/broken for me. The free version of Trillian doesn't really lack anything particularly useful, so that's what I use.

Some miscellaneous stuff that might be useful looking at what I have installed: nmap, blender, maybe skype

I don't have a ton of insight in to Windows programs since I usually use Linux, so I can't be too much help.

Don't forget emulators!
