Manuals for anything beyond the range of my knowledge.
Unless said assembly involves a computer, I probably need the manual. ____________________ |

| I usually read manuals -- although, when it comes to assembly, I suffer from that problem of always ending up with extra pieces left over. X.x
Also, I tend to read game manuals hoping for them to have a bit of in-universe flavor -- you couldn't imagine my irritation with the Modern Warfare 2 pamphlet-disguised-as-a-manual. As for cupboards and such, usually these are easy to figure out (still looking up what goes in where, as it is easy to misplace the screws or going in wrong order) - and often there are marks that say "you need two people to set up this", and you can do it all alone
As for manuals for electric(onical) devices, it depends on it. I think a cellphone is usually figured out really easy, if you owned a previous one from the same brand, or just by trial and error, without ever unsealing the booklet. Same with video games - you may want to look up for a quick reference for button assigment, if you for some reason don't want to tutorial levels in more complex games. Again, if it is made up beautifully, with nice artworks and information you might really need, instead of more or less bland generic tips, I would consider just having it, as it is a nice element. Still, it sucks if there is no printed one. Like you buy expensive software, and you get only a PDF on a CD. I understand they want to save costs, but for for more complex applications I would like to have an option to buy an edition with a good handbook. Like for Windows, you can buy the full version, but also get your OEM SB version (at least in Germany this is perectly legal - Microsoft cannot restrict those retail version to computer manufacturers/dealers only) with only a quick start guide. But, as said, if you owned a previous version, just take the included tour, or try it out on your own. ____________________ ![]() |

I always read the manual before I mess with anything, unless it's a video game from a series I'm strongly familiar with. ____________________ Exate Land - ZC/ZZT works from years past. ![]() "I haven't the faintest idea" ![]() |

| It kinda goes like this:
First I check if I can at once realize what should be done. If I don't know then I quickly skim trough the manual. If I still don't, then I read the manual. If it's not computers then I most often need to read. ____________________ ![]() |

Paulguy's Post configuration Sometimes.
With most electronics I wont bother, they're usually WAY too verbose and rarely particularly useful, or even lacking in detail where it matters or outright incomplete. If it's putting together furniture, I'll probably just look at the pictures to get the right screws/order, but the text is usually just useless badly translated mumbo jumbo. Some programs I'll check the instructions for, especially command line stuff where you kinda have to to learn the usage and stuff (though you can usually get by with appname --help output). ____________________ |
