You know how if you don't give your character any commands for a while, they might do random crap waiting for a response from you? This thread is about that. You are also requested to post pictures if you can.

There are a lot of funny ones, but Jim's brick in EWJ2 is amazing. See enclosed images-

Here, Jim chucks a brick into the air for no apparent reason. Now if you continue to stand still, Jim will clobber himself with his own brick as expected, but...

After you chuck the brick, you can move around, and the brick will still manage to connect with Jim's head. The only way it won't work is if you go to a different level with a brick still in the air.

Jim has other animations, like where he pulls a doll out of nowhere (like the brick) and eats it for no apparent reason, but this is the best one.

He also has an animation where he shoots himself with the plasma gun... I don't remember if that damanged enemies anyways...

I think the best one was in SonicCD, where Sonic would get bored and run out of the screen, and you get a game over. XD

I remember doing that once and laughing my ass off over it.

And I can't remember any idle actions in other games for some reason. Oh well.

In Addams Family Values (SNES), Uncle Fester has a variety of random animations. He waves, makes a funny face (which made me jump the first time I saw it because he stretches his mouth WIDE), and does a dance (I think). I can't remember if there are any more, but I do remember asking a Nintendo Game Counselor about it when I wrote them a letter with a bunch of other questions about the game. I also remember that they sent a personal response and didn't know of any animations other than the ones I'd seen.

Not sure where to find screenshots of this, but in Banjo-Kazooie (maybe the sequel too), if you stand around for a while Kazooie will pop up and look around, poke Banjo in the head, and eventually Banjo will get mad and choke her. I always found that pretty funny.

There were two good ones in Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow for the SNES.

The first, Maui is in his normal form and starts to spin his gun around. Sometimes as he's spinning, he'll lose control of the gun and it'll shoot him.

The second is when Maui's in his ninja form. First, he'll start playing with his staff.

Then he'll do the hula with the staff somehow.

I thought these were rather amusing myself.

lol choking the chicken

In Bubsy: Claws Encounters Of The Furred Kind (AKA Sonic for SNES ), he'd tap on the screen and point at his watch.

I always loved Sonic's idle animation where he'd just tap his foot impatiently. Seriously, you have to love it when the game's getting pissed off at you for deciding to take a break. How dare you!

Gomez does the foot tap in The Addams Family (SNES). Given that you don't rescue Morticia until the very end of the game, I can't really blame him for being impatient.

I always thought Sparkster's idle animation was awfully cute in Rocket Knight Adventures:

First, he just looks at you, blinking occasionally...

...and then he takes off his helmet and makes a cute little squeaky noise!

I love this game so much.

Chrono Trigger's characters have idle animations on the overworld. I don't remember which characters did what, though.

FireCatgirl0's post is making me want to play Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow again.

I like Gene's dance, from Godhand.

It's a PS2 game, and as such I have no means of taking screenshots for you. T_T

If you had a TV tuner card, and VLC, just open that input in VLC and take snapshots in it. It *should* work, in theory.

I like how in Metroid Prime Samus will start pushing buttons on her Arm Cannon if you wait long enough.

Yeah, Bubsy on SNES had funny animations (His Deaths come to mind).

Anyone remember Conker's Bad Fur Day? He'll just play Game Boy (On the XBOX-Version, he plays Game Boy Advance SP).

Also, Earthworm Jim looses his pants occasionally.
