I did PM someone for an IM name. They were on a grand total of once, IIRC.
People nowadays seem to be a lot more secretive about IM names and the like though. Back in the early I1 days before I had AIM, it seemed that everyone had their AIM names in their profiles.
That's exactly the reason I only let AIM names free. I've gotten crap adds from stupid Skype names, stupid YIM names, stupid MSN names... ...stupid ICQ names, most specifically. :|
I actually have never had much trouble with spam even from revealing E-mail addresses. The only times were with a Yahoo! account I rarely used and only had for a particular Yahoo! service and when I made the mistake of signing up with CashCrate.

I rarely use Skype and ICQ, and I haven't used YIM in many many years, so MSN is really the only one I'm familiar with from there - but I always thought you had to approve someone for them to message you? That seems to me like it would knock out practically all spam.
I have my MSN address listed in several forum profiles on various places and I've never once received a spam IM.

Originally posted by OnyxTo be fair, though... I pretty much stick with alternative clients for MSN. I haven't used Windows Live Messenger since 2007.
...Damn, I've been using Miranda IM for two years already? Where the hell did the time go?
I used to always use the official client (with Messenger Plus) but I switched to Digsby.. and just recently I switched again to Pidgin. I love eye candy so messing with alternative clients and addon programs is fun.

I used Pidgin for a while, but now I use AOL's AIM program.
I'm a single-IM-service girl, I don't have AIM, YIM, and MSN open all at once like a lot of people, so I wouldn't get much advantage out of something like Trillian. In fact, except for a few times on YIM because I went to a board with few AIM users, all of my IMing has been over AIM.

I actually don't really use any IM services other than MSN. On Pidgin, I have... MSN (obviously), an AIM account with a total of 0 people on it, and a Google Talk account which I use for the free SMS service.

The rollover ads are still annoying though, as it's easy to roll over something by accident.
Yeah, ads are the main thing I hate about official clients. I refuse to use the official MSN client without A-Patch, which removes a lot of the pointless bullshit on it. "CLICK HERE FOR ______!" "BUY ______!" "GET NEW EMOTICON PACKS!" etc etc

I actually once thought that AIM was an Acmlm's-only service IIRC, I backronymmed it to "Acmlm's In Motion". I was surprised to find that it was AOL, because the ISP AOL wasn't popular at the time.
Originally posted by OnyxYIM was one of the official clients I disliked most, now that I remember it.
MSN Messenger was fine, I liked being able to set individual backgrounds... but IMvironments and text gradients were ridiculous.
...I happened to use the gradients, though it was far less of a crazy gradient and more of a subtle fade.
Wait, weren't IMvironments in YIM, not MSN? And I don't remember MSN ever having gradients.. unless you count Messenger Plus which supports them (pretty cool actually)

I was just comparing the two there, sorry if the wording was a bit off.
MSN Messenger's gradients pissed me off, and still do. If you're not using MSN Plus or whatever, or an alternative client... they just show up as crap.
