For the Dec 2009 edition, they did a ranking of the top 13 Zelda games. Here they are in order.

13. Zelda II
12. 4 Swords Adventures
11. Majora's Mask
10. OoAges
09. OoSeasons
08. Minish Cap
07. Phantom Hourglass
06. Windwaker
05. Link's Awakening
04. Twilight Princess
03. The Legend Of Zelda
02. A Link to the Past
01. Ocarina of Time

Needless to say, I was not very impressed by the list, even more so since a certain Hourglass sits over some of the best Zelda games. So yeah, go predictable 1 and 2.

Aww, the Oracles are so underrated At least LTTP and Zelda 1 got some respect though

My experience with Zelda communities is that most people only care about the 3D installments, whereas I'm only into the 2D ones.

I can never decide which Zelda game I like more. That's why I never even try and enjoy them all.

Needs more unordered lists.

Here's a proper list.

13. Phantom Hourglass
12. The Legend of Zelda
11. Ocarina of Time
10. Minish Cap
09. Majora's Mask
08. Oracle of Ages
07. Link to the Past
06. Four Swords Adventures
05. Zelda II
04. Twilight Princess
03. Wind Waker
02. Oracle of Seasons
01. Link's Awakening

Phantom Hourglass shouldn't even be on this list as it's not a true zelda game in my opinion. That shit was TERRIBLE.

Now, believe me, The Legend of Zelda (the original one) was my first Zelda game. Played it to death a million times, beating both the original and extra quests. But it wasn't that great.

Ocarina of Time... I've seen the whole game from start to finish a few times over the years. It wasn't that impressive. Didn't play much of it, cause it honestly could not keep me interested past the first time I got the master sword.

I didn't play Minish Cap myself, but I like the idea of it. I'm sure if I pick it up someday I'll have a blast, but I won't put this up high on the list till I do.

Majora's Mask played a bit cleaner and nicer, even though it was much the same. I only got so far before an emulator bug stopped my progress, and from what I saw it was much better than OoT.

Oracle of Ages, while I haven't played much of it, wasn't as impressive as Oracle of Seasons. Something about it just seemed downright depressing.

Link to the Past, which I played from start to finish, was "ok". The music, dungeon design, enemies, etc, all of it was memorable, but there was a lot more that could have been done.

Four Swords Adventures I had a LOT of fun with. There were a few annoying parts, but because of how this game works, the puzzles were much more complex and fun to get through.

Zelda II was absolutely amazing and shame on you if you don't think so. I want Nintendo to have another go at this style of Zelda, as it was truly original in the series, very fun, and the bosses were quite fun to take down. Who doesn't enjoy taking down a lava snake?

Twilight Princess blew my socks off when I first got it. The graphics were so impressive, I actually wanted to reach out and kiss Link. I wasn't too big a fan of the wolf crap, but what can you do about that?

Wind Waker is the Zelda game I've probably played the most out of all of them. Everything about this game aside from the ridiculous travel times on the ocean and one of the dungeons with the little seed guy was top notch. And yes, I do mean the same about the graphics. There could have been some improvements, but they weren't terrible like everyone says.

Oracle of Seasons was the first of the two Oracles I got into. The complexity of the seasons was rather interesting, and I'm hoping to see something like it sometime in the future, but I doubt that'd happen.

Why is Link's Awakening on the top of the list? It's Link's Awakening. That's why.

I actually enjoyed Phantom Hourglass. Sure, it was no grand adventure, and the repetitive voyages to the temple were annoying, but it was a fun challenge and had Linebeck. I wouldn't mind playing it again some time.

I'm not going to try and argue that your opinion is wrong, but I hope you'll be a little less harsh on things you dislike. You're likely to end up upsetting someone otherwise.

I didn't like the gimmicky controls and puzzles in Phantom Hourglass. Sometimes, a D-pad and face buttons just work better, Nintendo

For me:
8. Phantom Hourglass
7. The Minish Cap
6. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
5. Link's Awakening
4. The Legend of Zelda
3. A Link to the Past
2. Oracle of Ages
1. Oracle of Seasons

Going to take the N64, GameCube and Wii games out since I haven't really played them that much (and I *COULD* pop Wind Waker into my Wii right now but that's definitely waaaaaay down the road)... and I haven't tried Phantom Hourglass. So...

7. Oracle of Ages
6. Minish Cap
5. Oracle of Seasons
4. Zelda II
3. Link's Awakening
2. The Legend of Zelda
1. A Link to the Past

I don't really like comparing the 3D games to the 2D games, they're far too different to me, so I have two separate lists: (Excluding Minish Cap, Phantom Hourglass, Four Swords, and the more obscure Zelda games, as I either haven't played them that much or I just don't remember much about it)

7. Oracle of Ages - I don't care what anybody says, I hate this game.
6. Oracle of Seasons - I remember this being quite an improvement over ages, but that isn't saying much.
5. Zelda II - It's actually pretty good, but a lot of the stuff you have to go through just isn't that fun.
4. Four Swords Adventures - Bump this up a spot if you actually have somebody to play with.
3. The Legend of Zelda - Pretty fun, if you know what you're doing.
2. A Link to the Past - See: The Legend of Zelda, but you don't really have to know beforehand.
1. Link's Awakening - Surprised? Actually, it has its flaws, but they're more than made up for.

4. Twilight Princess - I played this after the hype, and I can honestly say I wouldn't do so again.
3. Wind Waker - Would have taken #2 if those required FedEx quests didn't suddenly appear in a bunch.
2. Ocarina of Time - Yeah, it's overrated, but I think it's still a solid game.
1. Majora's Mask - If OoT is solid, then this game is like a diamond.

So, yeah, I'm kinda not happy with Nintendo Power's list, to say the least.

Among the Zelda games I've played, it'll have to be...

7) Zelda II (it's like FF2 in terms of difficulty )
6) Oracle of Ages
5) Oracle of Seasons
4) Minish Cap
3) Link's Awakening
2) The Legend of Zelda
1) A Link to the Past

What the heck is wrong with you people? Have you sat down in this day and age and actually tried to play through Zelda II? It's the best Zelda game. It basically pioneered the action RPG and has great dungeons and difficulty. Majora's Mask is decent but I played all the way to the water temple and lost interest.

On the GC Collector's Edition and on DS: NES emulator.

It's the best Zelda game.
I dunno, it requires you (in a way) to play a flawless game or else you have to restart your progress. The game is more horizontal fighter than it is puzzler slash strategy battler. Also while Zelda 1 let you restart in a dungeon and shortcut through to where you were last due to having already opened doors and being able to sidestep enemies, you don't get that with Z2. You see enemy, you fight enemy. Or at least the ones that are in your way, sometimes the flying ones are ignorable. But you will have to spend your time fighting just about every ground-based enemy in the dungeons, and if you lose your lives? You get to do it again! Especially if you die because of one enemy that you can't get a decent no-damage strategy against.

It basically pioneered the action RPG and has great dungeons and difficulty.
Pioneered the action RPG, maybe. But the dungeons have must-fight creatures (unless you like taking damage to bypass them) and difficulty is like this: EXP is not saved, you cannot continue wherever you want, you are required by law to fight darknuts in a look-the-other-way-esque battle...the flaws keep me from enjoying it w/o savestates(I beat it on a savestate-enabled DS-based emulator). In other words, high difficulty and lengthy backtracking if you die(Compare to Z1, where the start point branches out into different directions for different dungeons and you do not have to fight every enemy OR you can at least learn how to dodge their attacks somewhat quickly).

Majora's Mask is decent but I played all the way to the water temple and lost interest.
Why does that sound like me...? (If I ever find the time, I need to restart that game. Play from the beginning and crap. Maybe learn how to do the bomb jump. Idunno.)

Majora's Mask was probably the first game I perfected from start to finish. And I abused glitches to hell and back with. Walking around as Fierce Deity Link.

Hahahahaha.

Zelda II blows. Sorry, but there's just no way around it. The insane difficulty just makes it no fun.

I played it and got past a temple or two and then was completely lost and died way too easily. Zelda 1 was kind enough to at least give you infinite lives and let you start back at the beginning of a dungeon.

I got to the third dungeon after pulling my hair out in Death Mountain and the 2nd temple. And this was over the course of a few weeks. I beat Zelda 1 2nd quest in a day with no prior knowledge of it except a few things my roommate remembered from when he played before. Zelda 2 is just too hair and unfair, even for an old-school game.

No it doesn't?

Also while Zelda 1 let you restart in a dungeon...

Yes, Zelda 1 lets you restart at the beginning of the dungeon with three hearts. Zelda 2 lets you start on the screen you died on. Clearly superior. Considering the size of the overworld, it takes very minimal time to get back to the dungeon.

You see enemy, you fight enemy.
Kind of like in Zelda 64 in all those locked rooms where you fight one or more to open a door?

Especially if you die because of one enemy that you can't get a decent no-damage strategy against.
Basically any Zelda game with enemies you don't know how to kill?

lengthy backtracking if you die
So uh, basically SMB if you die before finishing a World? It takes like 60 seconds to get anywhere on the world on the first continent. Like two minutes on the second. What's the problem?

the flaws keep me from enjoying it w/o savestates(I beat it on a savestate-enabled DS-based emulator)
I beat it on my NES for the first time over the course of two days with like 6 hours of gameplay time combined very recently. The only help I got was how to beat the final two bosses (From Shadic, so basically how people handled Zelda 1 back in the day, getting hints from all their friends for everything) because the final dungeon, I will agree, is a little overkill. At least it has a killer song though.

On the topic of Zelda 1, have you ever tried playing it without a map and not knowing where the fuck anything is? My dad and mother did when they first got it, and they made their own map and checked off every bush they burned and rock they bombed. I have it still (laminated), it's pitiful. They remember very fondly that getting in to the last dungeon took them months and months of searching every day before my mom finally found it. Zelda 1 is a game that is needlessly hard if anything. If Zelda 2 wasn't hard, you would have a quick two hour game. That's just silly then.

It may be Nintendo Hard with a few items that are incredibly hard to find without knowing about them, but that doesn't make it a horrible game and I certainly enjoyed it far more then any other Zelda game (And I grew up on Z1). It feels like a real adventure and once you conquer it you know that you just beat a challenging adventure.

I watched my brother attempt playing Zelda II when it came out on Virtual Console. He's played and beaten lots of Mega Man Zero and Castlevania games, and he was getting his butt kicked by little blobs in the beginning of the game. I don't know if he even made it to the first dungeon. He only played it once.

I'd also like to mention that I currently have my system sounds set to the menu sound effects from Ocarina of Time. They're some of the most beautiful sounds I've ever heard.
