Ok, so I'm giving my younger nephews a computer for Christmas. They're about 4 and 10ish. I plan on setting it up so they'll be on limited accounts so they can't hose the computer. But I'm thinking of also putting something on there like deepfreeze because their mother will probably use it and she is about as likely as they are to load it with stupid crap. I'd really hate to have to go over there to install anything all the time, but then I'll always get the usual "it's too slow!" crap when they install every ad supported program under the sun. Anyone have any recommendations?

Also, I'm curious what some of you would recommend I put on there for some kids and computer novices. I know what I'd personally put on here, but other people are different and I just don't have any point of view or ideas. Currently it has windows 7 ultimate with all drivers and updates, and nothing else.

I'm not sure if Windows 7 Ultimate is really necessary for casual users, I'd imagine the home version or whatever would suffice? Of course if that's all you have then ;x y'know. I guess kids like games...couldn't hurt to throw some fun free-ware on there. I recommend Jump N' Bump, an old programing instructor of mine claims to have had a hand in coding it, and I remember it providing us a good deal of fun when I was around the age your nephews are. (I was probably a little bit older than 10 though) I hear there's other versions floating around on the internet too but I honestly haven't kept up.

edit: fixed link

It's only ultimate because that's what the crack made it as. :p

As long as we're already illegal, perhaps I should put some goodsets and emulators on there? Then set it up with some frontend thing so they don't have to dick around with the emulator itself.

Never give anyone a computer, ever.

You are now responsible for everything that goes wrong with the computer—whether it is your fault or not. If they hose the operating system, you are now responsible for it. If the power supply explodes, you are now responsible for it. If they get done by a phishing scam, you are somehow responsible.

The only way I'm ever giving anyone a computer again is with a legal document absolving me of all responsibility.

Let me add to this. The legal document must also require payment for any fixes I do. In Canadian dollars.

No kidding. I gave someone a computer and I've regretted it ever since. Now I'm 24-hour tech-support woman for any retarded shit that they do with it, and hell, half of the time they even want me to USE it for them as well as "fix" it.

They actually had the gaul to ask me to: go online for them, do a bunch of random searches for them even though they are more than capable of doing this themselves, go on Ebay, look for stuff they might want, buy it UNDER MY ACCOUNT instead of showing them how to make their own, download shit for them (which I might mention is a 50gb worth of movies on a computer that only has a 40gb harddrive), magically make the computer run faster, and reformat the hard drive AGAIN without losing any of their stuff that they have no backup of, all without pay and in under 5 minutes.

On top of this, one of them vaguely found out about rom hacking, actually handed me a web address, and basically demanded that I immediately start making him a Playstation game from scratch. And this was all in my most recent visit to their house where I basically told them both to fuck off. Wow, I thought people were only this dumb on the internet. I'm seriously starting to wonder why I still call these people my friends. They've had this computer for years now, and they don't even bother to TRY and use it properly. Next time they fuck it up I'm telling them either to pay me by the hour for the time it takes to reformat AGAIN, or just buy a new fucking computer.

I only give people already dead piles of scrap metal computers if I give them anything at all.

Dead piles of scrap metal with lengthy legal documents?

Nah. I just tell them it's junk. Legal documents are for when I fix people's computers.

If they put it together and make a computer out of the functional parts, they've created a new computer and I'm in no way responsible for it. :p

Yeah, don't give someone a computer unless you LIKE being their tech support monkey for the next five years. It's really not worth it, trust me.

If you do plan on giving them a computer, make sure to limit it. A lot.

[00:31] <+darthbobby> I mean, damn. Have a little sense at least.
[00:31] <+darthbobby> I have things I need to be doing at 12:30. Namely sleeping :|

[00:31] <+devin> send them hentai

[00:32] <+darthbobby> I've already had to walk them through step-by-step how to install the flash plugin, just so they could watch porn (yes that's what they told me)
[00:32] <+darthbobby> and then they still couldn't get it, so I had to make a trip out to do it for them

[00:33] <+devin> well that seems as valid a reason to install the flash player as any
[00:33] <+devin> but yeah i hear ya, helping people with computers is a pain

[00:34] <+Xkeeper> that's when you say "Sorry, our free tech support is only available from 3 PM to 5 PM Monday through Friday. If you would like 24-hour tech support, the cost is $20/hour."

[00:35] <+darthbobby> and nothing pisses me off more than when they look at me like I'm stupid when I tell them that a loose VGA cable will not cause their computer to be slow :|

Yep. Hate my life.
