I used to get Veterans' Day off school in New Jersey and New York, but not here. My dad gets it off, but he works for the US Army

We've never gotten it off.

(Veterans Day = Remembrance Day in Canada)

And despite the fact we've never gotten it off and that it's not a statutory holiday, the mall near my house went to great pains to state, on the doors, that the mall was OPEN today. Like it is every year on this day.

Both my sister and I had school/work on Veteran's Day, but she used to have it off in high school

There was no public school yesterday, but that was about it.

New Jersey and New York public schools apparently take off for just about everything. I remember in New Jersey getting off for Rosh Hashanah, Columbus Day, Yom Kippur, Veterans' Day, I think Martin King Jr. Day, etc. In the Buffalo area, I lost the Jewish holidays but not only did I keep Columbus and Veterans' Days, we got 2 weeks off for spring break

Then, I moved to Michigan, where the schools are a lot more stingy with days off Only Thanksgiving Thursday and
Friday, Labor Day, Memorial Day, and a couple of days in February, plus 2 weeks for winter break and 1 week for spring break. Not only that, they start the school year in August instead of September, sometimes as early as the 22nd or so.

We would get... Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas/New Year's break, Spring break, Easter break and Victoria Day as well as a handful of meeting days for teachers that we got off.

Probably had at least 1-2 days a month off.

Oh yeah, we'd get those occasional "Inservice Days", before which the teachers would bitch that we got the day off and they didn't

My university is really stingy with days off, but it's not a big deal as you can easily set up a schedule with no classes on a particular weekday We also get a nice long winter break (officially 3 weeks, but usually longer because final exams tend to be clustered toward the beginning of finals week), but the gap between spring and summer semesters is a measly 4 days officially, and 2 of those are Saturday and Sunday.

The longest break I had during my 3 years of university was about 3 weeks (between semesters), just once too ... but at least I had a 1 week break in the middle of each semester (except internships)

Still better than at work where I've had a whole 2 weeks (+ holidays) in 2 years and half so far

My sister doesn't have the Wednesday before Thanksgiving off, either (again, both she and I had it off in public school )

Anyway, yea, around here, it's typical to get either both Jewish holidays and not the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, or either one of the two and the Wednesday before Thanksgiving...

Hehe. Managed to upset a large population of Twitter last night by telling them that I've never played any Metroid game ever before.

I'm currently playing Super Metroid. Not that I really know what I'm doing, but at least now I've worked out how a lot of the secret passages and doors work, which is a lot better than when I started and got stuck very quickly.

Actually, I've never played a Metroid game before either It's like that with me and a lot of popular games, especially newer ones, actually.

I never actually played a Mario game until 2000 or so

The first one I played was Super Mario World, and it was on the SNES9x emulator... however, I did get Super Mario Sunshine for the GameCube, but didn't really like it I do like the older Mario games, like SMW, Yoshi's Island, and SMB3, though...

I hadn't played a Metroid game myself until 2004.

Picked up Zero Mission and loved it, though. I've replayed it a few times, too, and I'm considering doing it again...

And I didn't get into traditional RPGs until last year

We had The Magic Candle III when I was 7 or so. It's an insanely complex Western-style RPG, and I think it scared me away from any RPGs other than action RPGs for years to come.

You should play super metroid, Onyx. It has a lot more cool stuff then zero mission!

I actually did get decently far in SM, too... I just found MZM a lot more fun for some reason.

I think I managed to beat Fusion, as well. I don't get why a lot of people didn't seem to like that one.

The first time I ever really heard of Samus was in Super Smash Bros. on the Nintendo 64, and the first Metroid game I played was Metroid Prime. I wish I had discovered the series earlier, because I loved the NES Metroid as soon as I unlocked it in Prime. I got Super Metroid on VC and loved it.

I'm progressing in Super Metroid, albeit slowly. I'm very bad at it. I've defeated two bosses now (I don't count the one at the beginning, that's more a part of the intro), but one of them was through sheer luck. I am pretty bad at dodging things.

Shooting diagonally doesn't seem to be easy either. It can't be done without moving, can it?

I've never played the Metroid series. It just doesn't appeal to me.

I've just never had the opportunity until the magical world of emulation came along. Especially because Mum didn't like game consoles when I was growing up (she said you should get a "real computer" instead of just something for games) and so I never had a Nintendo.
