Many of you know that I use a very crappy laptop at work. It's in the break room and used by anyone who wants to. There's two. Here's the specs for one of them.

Intel(R)Atom
CCU N280 @ 1.66GHz
1.66 GHz, 0.99 GB of Ram
Windows XP, service pack 3

So yea, that's pretty bad, huh?

My netbook is slightly less powerful than that (same specs, Atom N270, 1.6ghz). It works pretty well for pretty much everything I do on it. I tried playing NSMBDS on it and got around 3fps. Fun right?

My laptop is pretty crappy as well:

Compaq Presario C700
Dual Pentium @ 1.6 GHz
1 GB RAM
Windows Vista Home Premium

Basically, I went for price, not performance. Being a full-time student in Michigan can do that to someone.

I don't really have a laptop, but with an XP with about 3.5 GB of noticed RAM (4 GB installed), but with a moderately aged processor, sometimes things take a while to load.

I used to have a WinBook from like ... I think 1996. 13" form factor, 640x400 256-color screen, 100Mhz Pentium, 40MB RAM, Windows 98 for some reason. The thing must have been a beast back in its day. But then the internal 400MB hard disk died and it became useless.

Hmm. Is it a netbook, or a full-sized laptop? I'd be surprised if the Atom appeared in a full-size laptop.

It's really not that bad of a machine... my Aspire One has pretty much the same specs (except Win7 Ultimate and 2GB of RAM) and I could seriously use it as my main machine.

Might want to shoot for Windows 7 if you can. If you have an .edu email address, you can take advantage of a $30 offer for 7 Home Premium or Ultimate. I'd recommend the latter, though.

Yea... my sister went for that Windows 7 Professional offer, and saved a ton of money on it (it's $200 normally, IIRC)

I went ahead and bought a new computer for Windows 7 anyway, since I started to boycott Apple products...

I think I'll buy a new computer after I move next year Well, unless this laptop dies before then, in which case I might have to get a new computer earlier.

I need a laptop for school right now, but after I graduate I think I'd rather get a desktop.

Maybe it's the connection that blows. And for some reason, it's running pretty fast today.

It's a little notebook, BTW. Says Eee PC right under the monitor.

Aha, so it's one of the netbooks then. Most of them have specs around where you mentioned.

I'd just kill any processes you're sure you don't need running. Even that helps speed things up...

My laptop bit the dust.
My PC, however, is awesome. 4 GB RAM, quad core processor, nvidia 9800 gtx or something video card....
Yeah. I'm happy.

While we're comparing laptops and desktops...

My laptop's more powerful than my desktop. 2.1ghz AMD Turion (dual), 3GB of RAM, an ATI Radeon card of some sort that I still need to figure out, and Vista Home Premium (yeah, I couldn't really be assed to upgrade it yet).

The desktop's not too bad except the processor, really: 2.6ghz Celeron D, 2GB of RAM, and a GeForce 8400GS. This machine in particular happens to be running Win7.

...Perhaps you can suggest that upgrade to whoever manages the netbook there, Anya? It should be a noticeable speedup, at least from my experience.

I highly doubt that will happen. I work in a casino and there are so many bosses and different departments...

Speaking of crappy computer things, my Internet connection has been acting up lately

I also used to have a crappy Dell Inspiron laptop, but I trashed it because it had a lot of problems, like a dead LED inverter, defective battery, and the OS was slow to boot...

I hope you at least saved the HD and RAM (provided it wasn't the problem). It could've been bad RAM or odd startup programs that might have made the OS slow to boot... I know a few people here have had faulty RAM before.

My laptop is currently in several pieces. The network card decided to poop out, and it turns out you have to take out every last component to reach it. I had to stop halfway through because I didn't have a small enough screwdriver. So at this point it can't even be turned on. Do I win?

Only until you reassemble it.

...And even then, was it really that bad a laptop?
