I see it everywhere--including my own sites--but I don't see anyone actually HAVING one.

Does anyone even know of anyone with a working number? Does it really do anything AIM or MSN can't? Does it mean anything anymore?

Inquiring minds want to know. :p

I have a number, and in fact Pidgin is actually configured with its information, but I'm almost never actually logged into it. Nor have I ever had a single actual conversation on it that wasn't "LOL I'm on ICQ!" in the 6 years I've had the account.

I don't think very many people actually use it anymore, and even if they do, there's no need to register an account if you have AIM since you can add ICQ users to your list and chat with them there. I'm surprised it's still available as an field in Jul's profiles... or most modern message board software's. The Wikipedia article still says it's "popular", but it even has a message box at the top saying there isn't enough information about its popularity/market share.

I have an an ICQ UIN for about 10 years which I registered at an internet cafe, when I had no own computer. Still using it today, although I fire up my messenger maybe a few times a year

As for ICQ, really liked it before 2001 or 2002. Just small, plain, simple - maybe not fancy. But the newer version simply have features I do not use, like those games (although people tell these can be fun actually). So I use Miranda IM, as it is fully customizable, and since the past 2-3 years quite stable. Like the modern contact layered plugin, which looks very good imo.

I first used instant messaging in 1999, but I never used ICQ... I did, however, use both AIM and YIM for a long time (but I never used MSN, actually )

We really should add fields for Yahoo! and MSN, and perhaps Skype too

I used ICQ until I started being bombed by spammers. It's mostly common in Europe, I think.

I never quite figured out customizing the client. Mind showing me a shot of your windows, maybe?

I used to use ICQ in the 90's. Then for some reason I just stopped and ended up with aim/yahoo/msn.

Also, does anyone still use Usenet at all? I remember using it back in my early days on the Internet back in 1998... my first posting to Usenet was related to Aerith in Final Fantasy VII

I pretty much stopped using newsgroups by 2000, and started to post on my first boards around that time

I never had ICQ. I remember asking what it was when I was new to boards in early 2002

I started IMing in early 2003 and used AIM because it was the most common at Acmlm's (and another board) Other than a brief stint with YIM in 2008, I've pretty much always just used AIM for IMing.

Usenet is definitely still in use. *Bad pun*

It's just host to a rather hidden community, and there's a lot of pirating of stuff going on there.

And that reminds me--Yahoo Messenger always seemed rather... redundant.

I used ICQ for a while in 2000-2001, before I had AIM and MSN I still remember my number (77842350) but only got on (from Trillian) a few rare times since then ...

It was still popular when I put that in (in 2001), even showed the online status ... I guess it stayed there ever since

I never used MSN since I've always preferred AIM and YIM... plus, I used to hate Microsoft back in the day (I don't hate Microsoft anymore... in fact, Windows 7 looks much better than Snow Leopard )

A lot of the people I talk to use AIM rather than MSN (or use both AIM and MSN), though

I liked AIM better than MSN at the time, then my cousin had MSN and I got it just to talk to him ... then I got more contacts on MSN but still used AIM a lot (see here), and later got Trillian so it didn't matter anymore

I still get on both now, but more for MSN than AIM

I don't use YIM anymore, actually... just AIM now

I use Pidgin since I can't stand the official AIM client... I used to use Trillian until I got a new computer

I think I used ICQ once, back in 2004. Didn't like it so I never bothered with it again.

Yeah, the code for my other sites originates to the last year it meant anything (circa 2004)--and so they have fields for it even today.

ICQ was the very first instant messenger, which was eventually acquired by AOL... which is why you can contact ICQ contacts using AIM, IIRC

For some stupid reason, MSN is the most popular Instant Messaging service in Australia.

Which, frankly, shits me. I hate MSN. Very unreliable. I mean, sure, it doesn't make much difference to me (I use Adium and have all the different protocols set up), but MSN has the most problem connecting, or sending messages.

Very unreliable system.

Paulguy's Post configuration
I use AIM, MSN and Gtalk, all through pidgin or trillian. I never used ICQ but it always seemed silly to me.

AIM is alright. It's relatively stable, but file transfers are a bitch. They almost never work and when they do they go at dialup speed. MSN is similar in this regard, but I have a hell of a time with MSN usually. When I lose a connection, AIM and gtalk usually pick up on it pretty quick, but it takes up to 10 minutes or more for my clients to know that MSN lost it's connection, which I find odd. I'd say gtalk has been the most reliable, as far as connection and all that goes, but I haven't honestly tried transferring many files over it.as for voice and video, forget all 3 and just use skype. They're all terrible at it, except gtalk might be alright since it's open source and well-documented, but who the hell uses gtalk? I only have like 2 people on it.
