A statement was released today by U.S. President Obama on the Affordable Health Care for America Act.

“I congratulate the House of Representatives on the introduction of the Affordable Health Care for America Act, another critical milestone in the effort to reform our health care system.

"This legislation is the product of unprecedented cooperation and countless hours of hard work by Speaker Pelosi, Chairmen Waxman, Rangel, and Miller, Congressman Dingell, and scores of House members who share my conviction that we can’t wait another year for health insurance reform. They have forged a strong consensus that represents a historic step forward.

"The House legislation includes critical reforms to the insurance industry, so that Americans will no longer have to worry that they will be denied coverage, or that their coverage will be dropped or watered down when they need it most. I’m also pleased that the bill includes a public option offered in an exchange. As I’ve said throughout this process, a public option that competes with private insurers is the best way to ensure choice and competition that are so badly needed in today’s market. And the House bill clearly meets two of the fundamental criteria I have set out: it is fully paid for and will reduce the deficit in the long term.

"While we know there will may more steps and much spirited debate before a bill reaches my desk, I congratulate the House on their work so far, and I’m confident that members will continue to work together to deliver meaningful reform for America’s families and businesses.”

You can check out the original brief (which is exactly what I posted above anyway) on the White House Press Office Website.

Finally

I'm American, uninsured, and poor, so this is a big deal to me I think healthcare is a basic right and shouldn't be reserved for the rich. I was amazed at only having to pay 10€ for just about any health-related expense when I studied in Germany

I would support the idea of using a federal sales tax to fund universal health care, although some people here in the US wouldn't like having to pay two (or, in some cases, three) sales taxes...

Most European countries have a VAT or GST anyway, which is added to the price itself rather than the total... so what you see is what you pay

Although I'm not sure how they would implement that system here in the US... (I know in some countries, they don't use an income tax and just have a high VAT/GST, since you can't evade that tax)

Yeah, people in the USA bitch about 8% sales taxes, and in Germany it's 19% and nobody seems to have a problem with it

I'd say lower the "defence" budget over time Does the USA really need googolplexes of military bases and all these wars? Then, there's all this money that could be put to other uses.

Military funding should be lowered, since we're butting out of Iraq anyway

With the money that we save, we could use it for more important stuff, like environmental and medical research, as well as health care

People in America see taxes as the Worst Thing In The World™, as if that extra $1 they put towards keeping everybody healthy is going to drive them into bankruptcy or something.

People in American can't understand that to get anything done takes money. They want everything without paying the slightest.

I wouldn't mind having to pay two sales taxes... I think most (all?) Canadian provinces are like that anyway, IIRC

Yeah, it's always funny to see people whining about how the latest tax is too high or voting in people who promise to cut taxes, and then wondering why the quality of our (schools, roads, army, military in general, health care, fire department, police, utilities; choose any) are so low.

Just a few years ago, the sales taxes were 7% and 7.5% here in Quebec.

Now it's 5% and 7.5%

We here in California have a 10% sales tax.

...

It's to fund a silly bullet train.

...

Yes, we're all insane over here.

Speaking as a non-driver, I would support the use of taxes to fund a bullet train

Michigan tends to hate mass transit because the US automotive industry is based here

That, and they want the Government / Obama to take care of them. I feel this is a good step towards something in this nation

The issue is we don't really have any jobs here, or a decent school system.

So we'll have a fancy bullet train, but no money to go on it with.

Detroit has pretty much the highest unemployment rate in the USA, around 25% (Great Depression-level!), and one of the worst school systems as well

Yeah, everyone I talk to tells me to avoid Detroit and Chicago.

I think I'll do just that.

At least the unemployment rate here is only 7%... which is much better than Detroit or Chicago

Anyway, if we did cut some of our spending on the military, we could use the money to fund better things, like a light rail system, universal health care, and the space program...

From Australia, it appears that citizens of the United States have very strange attitudes towards Government. I mean, I get the impression there's some kind of fanatic cult around the President, but no-one trusts (or wants to give any money to) the rest of the Government to get anything done.

Of course, this impression is all pieced together from your fabulous exports: Michael Bay films, television, and internet trolls.

Have you seen how effective high speed trains are in France and Japan? London is now linked by a 180 MPH line to Paris. It takes just two hours to get between the two capitals - you could have a business meeting in France and be back home in time for tea. In contrast, it still takes me three hours to travel from Sheffield to Reading - I'm not even leaving England. That's staggering, Paris is just two train journeys from my house (I would walk less than half a mile just to catch the trains).

Yeah, there is this group of Obama-worshippers who thinks he can never do anything wrong I did vote for him and I agree with many of the things he's done, but I think he has flaws just like anyone.
