Inspired by Web Pages That Suck. All in all, this is in good fun and to point out the flaw in some post layouts that I see across the board here.

And my first victim, is Supakitsune. I picked this one as the first example mainly to point out that one poor design choice can turn what would be a fairly aesthetically pleasing post layout into a "want to gouge my eyes out with an dull blade" pile of garbage. Harsh, maybe, but I'm doing the reviews here (again, all in good fun and hopefully improve the quality of layouts here).

Nothing too terrible about this layout in generally, obviously an Aero inspired theme. That is until you get to actually reading the post. It's the text. The shadow behind the text to be more specific. This layout's like watching a porno that starts with this gal stripping down and half way through her stripping down walks in this guy. Porno ruined. Or for those that are not good with analogies, the layout is ruined by the shadowed text.

Take away the shadow text, then we're in business.

Over the line, maybe. But it needed to be said.

Depending on how this goes, I may continue with other editions of Post Layouts That Suck.

Want to see a real horrible layout? Take a look at MobleSprout's one!

And yeah. I know. Mine is simple. But is light, fast, and looks better than no layout. And it isn't a generic layout; I made it myself.
By the way, when posting in the dark, black and dark colors are easier on the eyes than white.

What? That's a really huge layout! I'm even surprised noone ever told him to make it less huge... because he posted with it!

With all those animated images it reminds me of those ads for animated cursors that contain viruses...

I don't see it shadowed either. And I'm using Firefox.

However, I have difficulty reading it.

I'm assuming that you're not using Firefox 3.5?
Because text-shadow was not in Firefox in 3.0 and prior versions.

The shadow is a bit intrusive but I've never had trouble reading his posts for some reason

I actually really like the shadow effect. It's one of the neat little things that make Supakitsune's layout different from everyone else's.

That's pretty funny, considering Internet Explorer once had its proprietary shadow effect (and glow, flip, etc.) that no other browser supported


I don't mind the text shadow too much, but maybe a lighter shadow or bigger/bolder text would make it better

The big problem is that the shadow is black and the text is black and that makes it ILLEGIBLE

The shadow doesn't even render in Safari, thank goodness. It's never a good idea to use effects like that on body text either: perhaps for a heading, but not for body text.

See, now I just hope the pink background of mine is BRIGHT AND HAPPY AND MAKES YOUR EYES BLEED.
