What is the darkest grey you can see?
Yep, which is the darkest grey you can see in the bars? Don't just pick black, actually look closely.

Everything below #080808 on this Macbook is just plain black.

My monitor's set to standard, so it showed 101010 as a really dark shade of gray.

Graphics mode, 010101.

I can barely make out 010101. Sweet.

#010101 for me is very close to black, but not quite.
So for me the darkest is black

Ah, so it's the darkest before black? So in my case it's #010101 as well.

By the way, why is multi-voting enabled?

I can see a difference between #000 and #010101 on my Samsung P2350G, but if I move the window over to my MacBook Pro's LCD (one of the original models, so no nice LED backlight) I can see #040404.

Before the first post had the colours in it, I thought maybe someone was supposed to vote for each choice to show the colours, although that seemed rather weird and silly to me

Paulguy's Post configuration
Multiple monitors. :| I voted twice. One for my main LCD and another for my iphone. only issue is this can't quite account for people who have multiple monitors that have the same result... oh well.

Also, I meant the actual darkest color you can see, counting black. so if #000000 is darker than #010101 on your display, you'd pick #000000.

Multiple monitors... I see.

Unfortunately I have only one monitor. I do have a laptop though, but I'm too lazy to boot it now just for that...

I still have a CRT, my trustworthy Samsung SyncMaster 957p, using it with its colour profile (too bad most TFTs have no ICC profiles, maybe you get them off the internet or just make your own using a colorimeter), and still impressed how that screen, despite its age, still shows everything up to #101010 (it is several years in use), although that colour can be seen only if centered in Paint Shop Pro with full view and dark background.
Display driver still is at the default 100% for all colours, gamma correction at 1,0 as well. Still, depending how costs will be, I'd like to buy a good LCD then, probably suitable for photo editing.

I wonder how the reference image will look, if you have one of those Eizo screens at the upper end of the price scale, as these babies cover far more than AdobeRGB, like Wide Gamut

So you still have a CRT?
CRTs hurt my eyes when not set to a high frequency. And they take a lot of space

So I'm in no way against your idea of buying a TFT

I'm on a CRT myself and I can see a difference between 000000 and 010101 sometimes, yet others I can't. (Probably a mood factor, or something?

I will likely be stuck with this CRT until it dies. 1024x768 sure is great!

Well, #080808 is the last one I can see clearly, although I can detect #040404 if I look closely.

@TheKinoko: I run those 1280x1024 at a refresh rate of 85 Hz. Technically this thing could even go up to 1920x1440, but then the frequency would be stuck at 60 Hz (beside the really tiny text on the desktop then). 85 Hz is sufficient for not noticing any flickering. Earlier I used 75 Hz on my older CRTs, as I thought higher than that would make no difference on a CRT. But the difference is noticeable indeed.

On the other hand there is still enough 1024x768 (even some, although rare, 800x600) users out there. See Bloodstar's post. Navigating bigger sites can be quite irritating, if the design is not compatible fully and requires you to scroll.

Yea... since I used 800x600 for a long time (about 1998 to 2007), it felt weird upgrading to an HD resolution (1280x800, then 1920x1200)

I can try to view this thread on my old computer, and see what the darkest grey I can see on that ancient CRT monitor is...

That's right. That's what actually makes Bloodstar's layout weird (no offence).

Indeed, 800x600 users will have to scroll to see his posts. But I'm surprised some people are still using 800x600. Those screens are tiny. 1024x768 is acceptable for me, but 800x600 would be really too small.

#101010 Is the lowest I can see with this monitor. Maybe I need to fix a few things, or get a new one...

I can see #010101 on my 27", even at a straight angle (and easily at an angle) My 19" just barely shows it but it's hard to see, definitely does #040404 though ... (they're respectively 2 and nearly 4 years old)

So what about 1024x600? Some notebooks use that odd resolution

It's mostly netbooks - I know my Aspire One runs in 1024x600.

It's actually a decent size, I was just adjusted to 1152x864 on this desktop...
