I'm curious about the quality of all your monitors. This is kinda like the gamma test in some older games. I recommend looking in a dark theme or using flood fill in an image editor to see a large area, and have a black comparison next to it. Test on all your monitors and leave comments.
EDIT:
#000000
#010101
#040404
#080808
#101010
#181818
#202020
#303030
#404040
#808080
EDIT2: Personally, I can see #040404, after that it's black.
EDIT3: iPhone's screen with the backlight all the way up (or any other level) stops at #101010.
With a poll like that, we probably don't need comments.
Anyways, it's only Tenten(ten) here. I stared up close to the montior as well (not healthy), didn't see a change on this end. Or maybe I see some metaphorical boxes there, not sure. Anyways, I can't clearly identify the grey past that threshold, so there.
I'm not entirely convinced that this is a good test of the quality of a monitor.
Anyway, on an sRGB IEC61966-2.1 colour profile with a standard gamma of 2.2 (instead of Mac gamma of 1.8) I can see #040404 clearly, and #010101 if I view the monitor at an odd angle. This is on a MacBook Pro with a matte screen.
I'd get up and go play with my Cinema Display but all I'm expecting to see there is that it won't do funny things at an odd angle.
If I turn brightness down, I'm lucky to see #080808
It's just supposed to be a quick test. I'm aware there are many many more variables that make a monitor "good", but this is just a simple one that doesn't require any extra equipment or expertise or subjective judgment.
Interestingly in Linux, I can see all the way down to the 010101 one. I've always had trouble with my video cards and this monitor, even though it's DIGITAL(DVI) so it SHOULD be 1:1. I think the video card goes in to some kind of "television" mode with goofy "optimizations" for movies or some shit.

On my Gem LCD monitor in sRGB mode, I can see all the way down to #020202 (and #010101 in full screen) in this test. Similarly, compared to white, #FCFCFC is always visible.
My monitor is definitely displaying at least 256 distinct levels of brightness.

I think this still tells you more about the configurations of monitors than their quality. A huge amount of what affects this is software.
Also reminds me how much of a nightmare it is trying to come up with consistent colour for the web (but then, that's why I'm in the sRGB colour space and 2.2 gamma anyway).
That's what my monitor looked like with the contrast turned all the way up, although I can only adjust the contrast in custom color modes. (Which is okay, since the default contrast level is perfect. )
