It's being shut down today, at last.

Should we just let it pass or post cheesy anigifs in memory of it?

I thought GeoCities itself was rather annoying with their right-panel ads and such

On the other hand, it's sad that so many independent Web sites will be gone Internet Archive tends to not find all pages or images, etc.

XKCD did all the work for me.

I skipped Geocities. I went more like this:
Expage (Lasted for eons, from 1997 to 2007)
Xoom (Destroyed by NBCi, which then died. I still hate NBC for buying it out and abruptly killing my website. On the other hand, it may have also destroyed my record of being dumb on the internet. :p)
100megsPopup (Still functional--I'm using it to host PNGs since they didn't make a filter against them--it's kind of an old derelict now)
SMBHQ (Still alive, but decrepit, I'm trying to help it)
My own server (Well, its status is sort of duh, nothing short of killing me will probably end it)

If you didn't back up your stuff... oops?

(Then again, odds are it wasn't all that important anyways.)

Like when NBCi killed Xoom in 2000 abruptly without warning...

It may actually be destroying a lot of embarrassing dumb stuff people made when they were young and lost access to instead of being a horrible loss. :p

I never liked Geocities; when I made my own website for the first time in roughly 1999, I used Homestead to make it. Actually, all things considered, Homestead was pretty intuitive! Unfortunately, they started charging for hosting and my old website was lost to time. Sure would like to see that again.

Still, Geocities is a pretty huge part of internet history, so it's a shame to see it go after all these years. It's practically a time capsule, what with all of the ancient websites on it still entirely intact. Are they all going to be wiped? I'd imagine that they should at least be left open for archival purposes.

You honestly think Yahoo! cares about any of that?

My first Web site was on something called "gameroom.com" It was one of the only non-GeoCities Web sites in a list of links, IIRC.

After that, I usually wanted PHP and MYSQL. I had a paid host for a while, but after the Web site failed I stopped paying and let it fade away.

Yea, that's what I'm thinking. I backed up a few things a couple months ago, but I had a few pictures saved on there. Oh well.

Mine was started around 2001 or so (be aware some of the archive dates go to the wrong date).

I made one last update yesterday, then backed it up. I'll find a place to put the files later. It's only like ~4MB.

Used to have pages at other places like Homestead, Angelfire, ZendURL, etc. Most of those are long gone.

I can't say I've ever had a Geocities account. Not really gonna miss it.

WELCOME TO MY POST!!!!!1 -->
I am not going to miss Geocities ... I think I might have tried to make one back in like 1999 but it rarely actually loaded. It was unreliable and uncooperative and everyone always went wayyyyyyyyy overboard with things on their pages (including myself. I remember abusing Netscape Composer's rainbow text thing; I think I was trying to make a downloads site for The Sims, actually, but I didn't know how to set it up at the time.)

edit: I found an old archived page I made for a zelda classic quest on the wayback machine ... but I don't remember ever making it. It's so terrible I don't even want to link to it here.

I never used pagebuilders, I just coded the HTML manually Well, except for a class where we learned FrontPage.

Does anyone remember when frames were all the rage? Those could get annoying, especially when links didn't break out of the frames and you had part of 1 Web site around another

Paulguy's Post configuration
Eh, it's not too big a deal IMO. Most meaningful stuff has been moved off and anyone still using it could easily transfer off to one of many other free hosting sites.

As for my history:
Homestead a long-ass time ago, like 1999 or 2000 (I didn't really have decent internet before this). I forget what I had on here, but I think it was mostly just throwing random text and crap around with no particularly purpose. I used it's weird site builder thing that was surprisingly good for the day (though, if I remember correctly, produced some of the ugliest-ass code ever)
Tripod a bit more recently, maybe ~2002-03. Pretty much the same as the last, but more related to South Park. I really really liked South Park. I made a really basic HTML page.
Bumming off various individuals providing hosting, mostly to dump off files, but I'd occasionally try to make a website. First attempt was some REALLY REALLY ugly thing made in, ugh, Microsoft Word. I had no idea of what colors worked well together and no basic design skills. It was pretty much what you'd see on myspace. It was just to post random Megazeux games I had made. Second attempt was in HTML. Pretty similar to the last hand-written page but again for Megazeux games, rather than South Park. Mostly plain, unstyled design, other than setting the font and bg color.
Now I have an actual host which I installed wordpress and some stock layout on to. I never update it. I never had anything interesting to write about that anyone cared to read. I mostly just use it for storing files that I want to send to people or be linkable.

Nowadays, I have slightly better design skills in that I can at the very least make something that can be read. As far as "looks good" or "doesn't burn your retinas" is another story, but I like to think I'm improving. And on the technical side, I've learned basic HTML and CSS.

I've actually never used Geocities. The only free web hosts I've ever used are Comcast-provided hosting (well, technically not free, but it came with Internet access) and Freewebs. I guess I arrived on the Internet too late

I'll still miss it, mainly because there were some pretty hilarious websites on it. r.i.p.

I never used them either, just freewebs and funpic.

I say we throw in some GIFs.
