Ok, so this isn't really a big deal, but bleh. This is the one reason why I was considering not voting. It's just a big hassle.

I'm not even sure if my job will compensate me, so hopefully that will be enough reason to get me out of it. What really sucks is the time frame, its right through Thanksgiving. Considering that I am the only person who can cook that dinner, and that this is one of the few times a year that I ever get to see my step-grandfather, I'm a little pissed.

So, have any of you guys had this pleasant experience yet? Know of any way to get out of it?

Yeah, Jailtime.

In Georgia you can have the Judge pity you if you are a veteran or something like that. But if you have a GOOD excuse (Like you have to take a trip out of state), then you have a chance of not getting picked for actual Jury Duty.

I had to go two times in the past three years, and they never picked me to being one of the jurors(sp?).

It is boring, but they pay you pretty good, so it's not like it's the end of the world or anything.

I've never had jury duty, but I remember one of my professors back in university did back several years ago o_O

It's ridiculous how the right to vote gives you eligibility for jury duty >_>

Best thing that can happen, is that you get picked to go into a court room where they will pick people from a smaller group. That's where you don't want to get picked, but hopefully enough time has lapse that they will just send you home and you won't have to worry about it again for another x-amount of years. That's what happened to me one year. My first time there, I didn't get pick and I had to wait in the holding room until like 6pm.

What do they usually pay you? I was told that the most I could expect was to be reimbursed for parking. This is coming from my dad though who hasn't been in at least 20+ years, and may be remembering incorrectly.

Pay? I never got paid for going to jury duty. Unless you have a job, you won't get paid. If you have a job you have to tell them that you have to take time off for jury duty and show them proof that you were there.

I never really understood why people hate jury duty so much. I mean, christ, guys.

I don't hate jury duty. I understand that it's a civic duty along with voting. It's a way better deal then what your civic duties would be in the ancient world. You're a roman citizen? Good, you are now required to go out fight and die for Rome constantly because all we do is wage war. And by the way, if you are not the absolute ideal soldier, you will be stoned to death. Fall asleep on duty? You will be stoned to death. And if you lose, fine, your entire army is being decimated as punishment! You won? Great! Time to go out and fight another war.

In fact, I wouldn't mind doing this at all if it weren't right through the holidays. That, and knowing my job, I won't get reimbursed for the two weeks this will take. That's an entire paycheck! What makes it a hassle is that from what I've heard, most of the time, it ends up just being a complete waste of time. You could show up all day every day and never get picked.

I'm fairly sure that your job is legally obligated to reimburse you as this is something you are required to do (i.e. not some vacation or whatever). You'll have to look it up for your specific state.

And that assumes they choose you anyway, which they very well may not.

It's the law, they have to pay you while you're at jury duty.

I hate it because it's located downtown where there's no parking and the traffic is a bitch if you get out at 5 or 6pm. Plus I get headaches if I wait in one place for too long.

I don't even know if we have jury duty here... I've never heard of anyone receiving a summons.

I wouldn't even take it seriously if I was picked. I'll just go with what everyone else picks and wear those fake glasses that Homer wore so I can sleep during it.

I'm not register to vote at all, so that means I won't get picked for jury duty. Why am I not register to vote? Well it's because I don't care about it.

I was under the impression that everyone has to register.

I don't even remember when I did. Might have been in high school.

Oh it's probably automatic. Or it's linked with registering for something else.

Of course, if I'm ever picked I could just show up and not speak a word of French. I'd get out of it.

Nah, I didn't register to vote until I was almost 19, IIRC I got my Michigan ID before that though, soon before I left my parents' house, so it had the wrong address on it for years

I'm usually awkward and shy when I'm there so it's helped me so far in not getting picked.

Oh, well then I probably won't get picked either. I'm extremely awkward and shy in most public places, especially if it has anything to do with government, is some sort of hassle, or something where I have no clue what I'm doing but still have to go. That's the reason why I prefer to vote absentee and hate going to the bank, post office, DMV, etc.

Or you could use:

Or I can take another page from The Simpsons and say that I'm prejudiced against all races.
