So, yea... what are your favourite (main-series) Final Fantasy games?

For me, it's a toss-up between Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy VII >_>

Although the first version of FF6 I played was the SNES version, Final Fantasy VI is better on the GBA, and I'd really like to see it on the DS(i) eventually (of course, after FF5) ^_^

FF6 GBA is basically the ultimate version of FF6, since it has the bonus dungeons and espers, and many bugs were fixed, like the Sketch glitch (which could be used to get 99 of some items in the original SNES version, but could fuck your file) and the Evasion glitch (which made it so both physical and magical attacks used the Magic Evasion stat)...

Final Fantasy VII, OTOH... this is probably my all-time favourite game, since it was actually one of the first games I stayed up late to play ^_^

I always felt FF7 was a little on the easy side, though... I once beat Sephiroth in the low-40s for levels o_O (also, the item cloning glitch made it too easy to get Megalixirs or other rare items >_>)

The only drawback to FF7, was the lack of a New Game + feature... I really enjoyed that in Chrono Trigger, and the NG+ feature, as well as CT's 13 endings, gave it a lot of replayability ^_^

I would have to say, one, five and ten!

One for the great story, music, and just plain fun to play!

Five for the great gameplay mechanism and huge replay value.

And lastly, ten for the great story and music. And yes, I pick ten over six or seven any day of the week!

VI's the only one I've ever really liked all that much. I played through V and VII but couldn't really maintain interest in either... I know the latter of the two is wildly popular, but I couldn't really get into it. I've thought about giving it another chance sometime but I've just simply never gotten around to it.

Either 3, 4, 5 or 6, I can't really decide on a single one since I liked them all (but maybe 4 and 6 a little more)

Then again, I've only played 1 to 7 (originals), and the only remake I played through was FF3 DS

FF6, of course!

I haven't played too many, actually I liked FF1, FF4 (but I thought the DS one was too hard), and FF5 so far as well

I didn't like FF9 though

I didn't really like FF2 or FF8, because they deviated from the standard FF formula too much (come on, no MP in FF8? the spell drawing system really sucks, and it's too tedious to build up spell charges...)

Also, Final Fantasy II's stat-up system was fucked up, like you had to harm yourself in order to gain HP, MP, etc. (remember, there were no levels in FF2) -_-

Finished 4,5,6,7,8,9, got until the final boss in FF 3j (save file gone), and only got deep into FF 6.

Although it might be one of the more generic ones (you basically only fight and switch Espers around, and if you learned the -ra spells early, you were God already), I really enjoyed the soundtrack, the story and the - for me - best villain ever created.

A few lines for every FF I know/played:

FF 3j. Seriously, I loaded that game and was not too impressed before I left the beginning cave. But then those jobs became available and I got hooked. Never encountered an NES game with that much effort. The story may be minimalistic, compared to today, but hey, there are twists, really catchy and good music - and the end-game is just stunning. Never head so much fun bashing the foes with that awesome spell and skill arsenal. Although the difficulty level is unreached. Try to flee and die, reach the boss and be out of magic. No save points in dungeons (really nasty in the huge final area). But it is definitively worth it. A lot of training or a second playthrough, and those enemies actually fall a lot faster.

FF 4. For some reason I like the graphics in this games more than in FF 5. The music is just beautiful orchestra, with some of the best battle themes ever in the series. And although the game is quite short, I enjoyed every second. And the final battle is just epic. Too bad FuSoYa isn't around too long in the party ...

FF 5. The characters were a bit too generic imo, but the refined job system was more than any replacement for that. The dungeons were fun, you have weird enemy names like 'Arute Roite' (in katakana: German "Alte Leute" - old people) and the Cleft of Dimension just rocks.

FF6. My favourite one, got the import cart. Popped that bastard into my ARP III -> SNES (I have a PAL console), I got hooked the first moment I heard the staff roll/introduction music. Too much to write down here, everything is known already. The music is phenomenal, aside from Chrono Trigger and maybe Terranigma one of the best games (besides DKC of course), when it comes to graphics and atmosphere. So many characters, so much to do, so a redeeming final battle in this game, although the game is a bit on the easy side. If you play this game on a PAL SNES with an Action Replay to bypass the region block feature, a major part from the ending misses, exactly when Gogo falls down and you just see a pair of eyes. It just produces a black screen, but the ending actually continues, as even the second part is played normally.

The GBA version is really nice, but sadly it had quite some slowdown times, like the GBA couldn't handle that much stuff like the SNES (noticable if you cast spells with huge animations like Meteor and Quasar), and - due to being a handeld - the music suffered a tiny bit.

FF7 was a mixed bag. There were long portions I didn't like the game, but the end-game was pretty nice. Leveling Materia Orbs always feel you step forward, as even pointless battles net you AP. One of those games where I grinded where I didn't intend to, just want to gain another level for that Materia.

FF8 ... well, I disliked the game, except the last area and battles. The final battles were boasting great effects as well as challenging in terms of finding the ideal setup (Griever's final Shockwave Pulsar is devastating if not prepared) and, of course, the entire soundtrack. Just beautiful. Oh, and there is Triple Triad, of course

FF9 - some people didn't like the game, due to its "childish" story. Well, in this term FF7 isn't too different, only being set in another time period. But I think graphically it is one of the best-looking PS2-games, especially those fancy magic spells. Gameplay-wise most bosses are pushovers, but there is tons to find and the story seems very emotional. Liked the setting a lot, Hot & Cold is one of the most entertaining mini-games ever and as well the towns as the dungeons were made out nicely, like Burmecia or Ipsen's Castle.

Although this is quite a wall of text, I think Final Fantasy might be overrated, as many people say, it's the "best" RPG series. They may be right, as these sold very well usually and I think that Uematsu is a very skilled composer as well - but there are games like Valkyrie Profile, the Star Ocean series which were not made by Squaresoft (at least when tri-Ace and Square were separate companies) and had way better fleshed out battle and skill systems - and people like Sakuraba made great soundtracks as well. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to bash FF, but it is not the only good saga out there, as there a quite some games which can compete with FF easily.

If we are talking about the best RPG game ever I would have to say CT or paper mario. Call me crazy on the later one if you want to.

Final Fantasy (I) is the only one that I ever really enjoyed, and that's because I played the nearly grindless GBA version. (Even then, I wouldn't play it again) Just about every other one that I've played (II, IV, VI) managed to only capture my interest for minutes before it got too dull for me. The sole exception is VII, but I only got close to the end of the first disk, and that was after several breaks that lasted anywhere from weeks to months.

So, yeah, I can't really get into any of the Final Fantasy games, or any traditional RPG, for that matter; they're all just too dull for me to even get to the meat of the plot, minus just two exceptions.

Square-Enix really needs to remake FF5 and FF6 on the DS(i), because I really like FF3 DS (and FF4 DS too, but I prefer the SNES fan-translated version >_>)

FF5 on the DS(i) would be a great idea, and it would be necessary if they want to release FF6 on the DS(i), since it's not a great idea to skip numbers when releasing remakes...

Anyway, FF6 on the DS(i) would be awesome, because I've always wanted to see what Sabin's Blitzes would look like on the DS, etc. o_O

I was expecting FF3 for the GBA after FF1+2 GBA was released, and was a little disappointed when they skipped FF3 and went straight to FF4... I remember I was like "come on, will the rest of the world EVER get Final Fantasy III?", and then they went ahead and released it for DS, both in Japan and the rest of the world ^_^

Maybe they should release enhanced ports of FF7, FF8, FF9, and Chrono Cross for the PSP (or its successor) too, since it's been almost 10 years since those games were released, and they really could update/revise the translation for FF7, since it feels weird having spells still using names like Fire3 or Ice3 instead of Firaga and Blizzaga, and also the whole Aeris/Aerith thing needs to be rectified as well if they release FF7 for PSP...

No Chrono Trigger for the GBA also pissed me off somewhat, since I waited until the bitter end of the GBA's lifespan in mid-2007, and still no sign of Chrono Trigger... however, we FINALLY got Chrono Trigger on the DS just last year ^_^

I would rather have them make new games then remakes. That being said, one title has been shown for the DS that will use the class system and it's new! So I'm fucking excited for that title! :3

I would like some kind of FF 6.5 to be (re)made.

It could even be the same graphics, but new monsters (not only pallette swaps or 1% of the entire sprite database, though), new spells, regions etc.
Of course it might be really difficult to impossible gathering the exact same developers, to create *new* graphics and make (good) new music, which is completely different to the SPC engine. Talk about some weird wet dream from a FF6 fan.
But again, re-inventing the wheel is impossible. They already added new bosses like Kaiser Dragon (which has six-digit hitpoints) in the GBA port, but as your Ultimas, -ga spells and many more anyway do 9999 at that level, it is just more a question of how many hits that monster needs instead of damage. Although Jabotender was a lot of fun, he actually CAN be a challenge, even at high levels with his counter-attack

The GBA version went into the right direction, as the new translation indeed is nice. But I have to agree, FF VI in 3D would be awesome - if it just had not anime faces like the precedessors, more instead the "real" ones as featured in the original FF 6.

Funny thing, I sent a PM to terra a few days ago about a new FF6 hack that have some of those things. :<

I'm not sure how many things are new but feel free to check it out: http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/597/

1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 I'd say... some more than others but I haven't been able to get into anything past 6.

Don't mention 2 to me. Please.

Mine is the all time game that everyone oh so loves and enjoy called Final Fantasy VII.

I will assume everyone here has played it, beating it, and raped it to hell and back, so I won't go into no big details and just get straight to the point.

Only reason this game was my favorite is best during the time of the first Playstation, it had the best graphics, best story line, and best RPG elements of any RPG known to the Playstation. When Cloud first showed up on the screen he was a bad mother, until other games made him look so depressing.

Actually, I've never played it I know Tifa's boobs are big though

I thought FF1 for NES was hard and confusing with all the abbreviations I tried it, but abandoned my game and switched to the GBA version

Well, if you can ever get a chance to play it you should. FF7 was a really good game.

on a side note, have you heard anything else about the game besides Tifa's big boobs?

Um, there's someone named Cloud, and someone named Sephiroth

I used to post at hardcore Nintendo boards where people knew FF7 as "that game that made Square dump Nintendo for Sony" (I have nothing against Sony, but I prefer old games regardless of system)
