Daily Cycle II ~ -2592
Obscure Gaming Weekly is my attempt at a running series where all the weird games a friend of mine sends me get summed up in a few paragraphs of a review and linked to for your enjoyment. Anyway, nobody said it's going to be weekly either, so expect a rush of new ones for now and then a lot of slowdown.

#1 : Valkyrie no Bouken - Toki no Kagi Densetsu (or "The Legend of Valcule Valkyrie", or a billion other names that I can't figure out)

After a typical "scroll up", you're treated to Namcot's title screen. Hi, Namcot. Picking "Start", you're treated to some options.

Blood type, starsign, and, uh, color. Red, green, blue, white, pick your flavor.

Then the fun begins! And by fun I mean aggrivation. A lot of time is spent wandering around, and there's no save feature (just passwords), so in the likely event you die, you'd better hope you wrote down that 18-letter monster somewhere, or else you're really going to regret it.

You get a password by stopping by a house. I've found two, your milage may vary.

You get various spells and other goodies by leveling up (which you do by sleeping after getting the required EXP). By the way, the EXP curve in this game sucks.

You'll auto-recover HP and MP while you sleep, but it costs money, so if you end up bottoming out of cash you only get some sleep. Usually, though, it isn't a problem.

One major problem with this game is that you have no idea what you're doing. You can wander around and kill things, but until you actually have a clue as to your goal...

There's even little stone things you can stand on and push A to warp around with. They warp you to another one at random, so have fun stepping on the same one when it decides to be stubborn and not send you where you want to go. Oh, and some areas constantly suck your health, so be careful of those too. You won't know until your HP bar starts turning red, either. Fun.

Some enemies will posion you, too, and you can achieve the same effect by axing a treasure chest (it doesn't work) or petting a cactus/mushroom. Only sleep, some spell, or a triangular potion will fix it, so try to have one handy at all times. That or have an idea of where to go to fix it.

Of course, eventually, the inevitable happens and you die.

You only get 8 item slots, and you can only use items at certain times, so you should probably take care... you can't drop anything either (and most things only work a certain amount of times before disappearing, like axes and lamps), so if you need to pick something else up, you're screwed. You use things by pushing start and left/right (items) and pushing B, or pushing up/down for spells. Attack-items (axe/swords) can be left on B for constant use, but anything else will just revet back to your attack item after you push B. Spells are useful, but you don't have an MP display anywhere, so be careful.

You can get either the Japanese version or the "translated" version from their respective links.

Needless to say, this is one of those weird "Japan only" games, and any hints on how to beat the damn thing are very, very welcome

This is a very odd game...

and "Valecure" has to be the worse translation (transliteration?) of "Valkyrie" I've ever seen...

Simplicity v1.1
I know that's supposedly based on the Valkyrie Profile series, including the Valkyrie games that are in the arcade, etc. but I've never really taken the time to look at that one. I'd really have to take a look at it when I get the chance.

Needless to say, that thread title has a potential series hold.

Looks like some Zelda rip-off, except much stranger and harder-looking. Are you serious that there's no plot that you can find?

The only text I've seen has been posted so far (okay, not "PASSWORD" or other trivial messages), but I've done a small look neither GameFAQs nor Wikipeduh have any information on it besides release date and box art.

Wikipedia's article on what appears to be the game's sequel gives the full translated title of this one as "The Adventures of Valkyrie: Legend of the Key of Time"... which at leasts says that if there is a plot, it probably has something to do with a "Key of Time", but other than that isn't too enlightening.

Googling in Japanese can be very useful. For example, did you know the guy in Atlantis no Nazo is named Win?

Google the title and look for useful pages (English translations can help).

Basically, you need to get these items:

- The blue helmet (in a dungeon)
- The blue mantle (ditto)
- The boat
- Makko (Mark? Not too sure about this one...)
- The picture of something (I'm completely lost here)
- The tiara
- The super sword

...Then beat the boss and get the key of time.

This is written in English, and has a lot of userful things

Fun fact: the translation appears to garble the ending. Joy.

The Time Magic is Zoning with powers, it is restored.

For those too lazy to read what Xkeeper linked for the ending...

I bet I could fix that...

The replacement for the title screen messed up the "The End" graphic. (Not to mention wasted space, and was misspelled.) I could probably fix that too.

Does anyone care?

I might do it either way.

I think he just forgot to add lowercase letters; from the looks of it, it tries to use them but fails miserably. (Fixing the title screen to read the proper title would be welcome too. )

Hm, this complicates things a bit. The lowercase letters are there, and it is using them properly. The reason they don't work is the page split. The first half of the page with the full alphabet is loaded, but the second half of the page with the title screen is loaded instead of the half with lowercase letters.

Unless someone knows how to change what pages are used, you're getting a new title screen, too.

You could just do it in all caps. So many NES games did this, I don't think anyone would mind.
