Great. I have a very simple video project that I need to get done by friday. Unfortunately, looks like tonight is really the only night I'm going to have to work on it. The only software I have to do this project with is Windows Movie Maker which I know sucks balls.

All it is, is setting a bunch of still jpegs to music. Not that hard. But movie maker keeps making it it hard. Why, because I can't even add one still photo without it crashing!

I've already disabled hardware acceleration, and tried running it off of an external hard drive. No dice. God I hate this program. It there is another incredibly simple movie editor our there that isn't absolute shit?!

I have a trial of premiere pro on here, but I have never used it. I'm about to experiment with it, but I really don't need anything nearly that complicated.

All I need is something that will let me set pictures to music, control the length of each picture, add effects, and export as avi. It also has to be something that I can get and learn how to use in 5 minutes.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I've never tried it personally, but I've heard PhotoStory can do stuff like this. Have you tried it?

I'm trying out something called VideoSpin right now. But if that doesn't do what I want then I'll try photo story out.

Edit: Oh joy, more Microsoft software. Plus I'm not sure I want to go through the whole windows validation thing as lately my computer hasn't liked that. Plus it's not even letting me run the validation until I install a bunch of updates that I don't have time to do right now.

The trial of Vegas Movie Studio might do what you need it to. I am not sure what the limitations in the trial are, though. But it's supposed to be pretty easy to learn.

Oh my god I'm about to smash this thing with a sledgehammer.

I think my whole computer is being sluggish/making my life miserable. Videospin is perfect, but my computer can't play anything in it in real time for whatever reason, making the whole thing useless for editing. Photostory I managed to download from CNET. It is WAY too simple. But, if I get desperate enough I can resort to using it. It literally just takes whatever photos you tell it to use, strings them together by filename, and adjusts the length to fit a song. Blech! I wanted this thing to come out at least somewhat decent.

I haven't tried Vegas yet since if my computer couldn't handle running videospin, I doubt it can handle anything more complex. I really need to format this thing. Its a pain in the ass.

Surprisingly, movie maker WILL play all of my stuff in realtime, but then it can't export correctly, and right now I can't even add a photo to it.

grrr

VirtualDub might be able to do it (even though it's mostly for simple video editing or converting), as long as all of the images are of the same type and size: (and same length, and no fades or anything)

- Name the files 1.jpg, 2.jpg, 3.jpg and so on, in the order you want them to be
- File -> Open video file
- File type: image sequence
- Select the first file and it'll add them all
- Video -> Frame rate (0.1fps for one image every 10 seconds, or whatever amount)
- Audio -> WAV audio, select the music file (convert to .wav first if needed)
- Enable full processing mode, select the compression and then save as .avi

Yeah, for an edit that simple I can just use photostory since its already installed. I need a little more control. I need to have the photos be varying lengths in order to match the song. Plus, the pictures are not all the same size, and I do want to use effects.

I tried Vegas. So far, I think it's going to work, but I'm still going to have to cut corners with this. I need to make 4 videos, each one with different pictures to a different song. I want to do at least one of them well, especially since I was already halfway through it when I started having trouble. It looks like one is all I'm going to have time to do.

Hopefully, I can make that one halfway decent in Vegas, and then just throw the rest in photostory for quick vids.

If you're curious, I'm doing this as a birthday present for my dad. I have 3 sisters, and for the past few weeks, we've been trying to get a bunch of photos together so we could do something of a video montage. We decided 4 videos, one for each one of us, each focusing on a different aspect of his life: Dad and his daughters, his work with the bus ministry, life and good times, and him and my mom. I wanted to do something with our home movies, but that was going to take WAY too much time, so a photo montage was the way to go.

I came up with the idea, and I agreed to do the editing since there isn't that much involved. I was going to have more time to work on this, but then my grandmother ended up in the hospital, so that took up a big chunk of my time. Figures when I'm pressed for time, everything has to mess up

The good news is, they're not expecting much. A photostory vid will suffice. I just REALLY wanted to put more effort into these. Oh well, at least I should be able to get one done if I clear some things off my schedule tomorrow. The vid I am trying to focus on is "dad and his daughters" since that's the main spirit of this whole thing, and it was turning out really well. If I ever manage to get it done close to the way I originally wanted it, I'll post it here when its finished.

Edit: Ok wow. I finished making this video in 20 mins, but as soon as I uploaded it to youtube, the audio got deleted due to copyright.

Did you advertise the audio? Otherwise, how could that happen?

Nope. For keywords I typed in dad, daughter, nostalgia, family. Someone must have been working overtime I guess.

If you really made and played the audio files yourself (owning all rights), used an existing audio file inside a Creative Commons or similar license (CC doesn't mean you may advertise the video, though), then you should report to YouTube. It could be an automatic Video-ID confirmation which has certain keywords, it might be a mismatch.

The song is "King of the World" by Point of Grace. So it is copyrighted. Everything else is my own material though. I didn't think about it when I uploaded it, but I'm still surprised they found the song so quick.

Anyway, thanks Bagel for recommending Vegas Movie Studio. It really saved my ass. And thanks also to VideoGuy since Photostory gave me another option for the other vids. Actually thanks to everyone for all of the suggestions. I was really stressing out trying to get this done.

I think YouTube might use some sort of music-recognition technology, hence the immediate audio removal. I don't think they have hordes of people behind the scenes checking videos as they're uploaded.

It's such a load of crap...videos containing a short clip of music playing in the background in a single scene have been muted. I wish the music industry would just die already.

No kidding. All of the copyright laws need entirely redone to actually reflect the 21st century. Why the hell isn't youtube considered to be fair use? It's not like anyone is going to use youtube to pirate the songs that people might use. They are all substandard quality due to the media alone, and even if you really wanted to rip it from the site, its a big hassle of a process that is made obsolete by filesharing by those who actually know how to do it.

If you ask me, Youtube is actually a huge source of FREE ADVERTISING for all of these music companies who keep complaining about copyright infringement. There are a lot of artists that I would have never heard of if it weren't for their use in somebody's fan video on the net. You put them all in one place on a site as popular as Youtube, and you have exposure that is arguably an alternative to radio. Put that together with the fact that it hard/useless to pirate the song through youtube, and the music industry REALLY has nothing to complain about.

You know what? I'm just going to upload this video at a file host.

Personally, I think copyright law has got ridiculous over the years I really don't think that copyright terms should be longer than most human lifetimes. At one time, they were 14 years, which is more than enough.

Copyright law is a real pain in the ass, especially since they last much longer than patents or trademarks -_-

I personally feel that copyrights should be 20 years with no renewals, much like patents (but, knowing Congress, that probably will never happen) ^_^

And, yea, I knew someone who got banned from YouTube because of the whole WMG copyright thing... and I had to remove quite a few of my favourites on YT because of them -_-

Oh, the Warner fiasco A lot of songs I liked were suddenly gone one day And even though it's OK to repost them now, I don't think very many of them have been reposted. Just the live versions are up, which have horrendous quality

Ok finally, here's my video. This is the one I made in Vegas. It's not perfect, and the pictures I had to work with were pretty old and crappy looking, but it defintely got the job done in 20 mins. My dad was bawling!

I don't have too many recent pictures of myself. This video is mostly pics from my 2 older sisters, and a few of my younger sister. On the very last pic though, I'm the one in the red shirt on the left. I kind of stand out from the rest of the pic since everyone else is in light clothing. Once I get a decent digital camera I'm going to have to start taking family photos again.

If anyone wants to see the others that were made in Photostory let me know.
