Well I've got the RTM of the Pro and Enterprise versions (legally might I add), gonna install it on my laptop and see what I think.

If I like, it will stay on my laptop, if not, back to Ubuntu on that as well.

It's nice to see the browser thing finally settled in an equal manner. Although I wish there was some way to do it without IE installed, as idiots will continue to ignore all other browsers and use it.

And by idiots, I don't mean people who go 'but I liked IE'!, I mean people who go 'What? There's only IE, I haven't heard of these here other browsers.'

That's why this whole IE-alternative legal suit is pointless. People who know little about computers won't have heard about the others, and will just go with IE. Or if anything, this choice will just confuse them even more.

What I don't get is, IE is free, all the alternatives are free, so why is this considered some kind of monopoly? IE doesn't block other browsers, and they're easy enough to get. It doesn't seem like the EU has any right to intervene if you ask me.

And no, I don't like IE either.

If I were Microsoft, I would just stop selling Windows in the EU.

The protests from the user base should then be enough to make the EU rethink their decision.

Stop selling Windows in EU is one of the stupidest company moves that Microsoft can make. Even with all the fines and money the company spends to fight legal issues, it still makes quite a bit of money in the region. All the hoopla over IE monopoly stems from the interests of a few. I don't have any sympathy for those wanting to be ignorant and companies all the time prey on the ignorant. Is Microsoft really that different?

Well, it might be from before your time, but originally browsers weren't built in to PCs. Netscape appeared and prospered, and Windows gave it the finger by sneaking IE into the system itself. Thus, they captured the 'idiots' who now no longer used Netscape because 'DURH THIS THING ALREADY INSTALLED.'

Thus it became a massive issue in which the IE browser collectively brought down web standards and encouraged pointless proprietary tags which made a real mess.

Eventually, the advent of Flash brought an end to the browser proprietary tag mayhem, but to this day people like the successors to Netscape would much prefer no browser be installed and all of them come bundled with a 'choose what yo install' ballot screen.

But of course, Microsoft has apparently become so entrenched even the regulators don't want that anymore. Pity.

Just feel like throwing in here that my experience with 7 was generally the nastiest thing I've ever had to deal with on a computer.

Compared to XP... 7 feels slow and unstable at times... and even my connection suffered. (cool, 400b/s downloading!)

If you're on Vista and you're choking, I guess 7 might be worth a shot... but anyone on XP or Vista who isn't having problems shouldn't bother.

Paulguy's Post configuration
Like any software, especially something as big as an OS like Windows, hardware definitely plays a role. I imagine you had some really awful driver installed somewhere that caused hell. As for your network issues, I imagine it has some defaults that're rather optimized for fast connections, but cause slower connections to suffer. Look around in the registry for stuff related to MTU and whatnot.

Good thing is, that you can test that thing legitimately - I don't know how it was before Windows 7, as I didn't test an OS by using a dev build and/or something cracked, but bought my operating systems by will. And since I knew XP was stable (usually you should wait a few months before you change your productional environment to that), I just bought it blindly.

On my old machine Windows 7 will not run - but Microsoft offers a cheap version for students (roughly 30 USD) - might be worth getting, saving more than half the retail price (the boxed version of Windows 7 Home Premium is just ridiculously overpriced IMO - it is about 180 EUR (~270 USD). Or just get Vista with that upgrade coupon, so you have two OSes.

I just will get Win7 in this period. If I'm not satisfied or even won't install it first, at least it won't burn a hole in my wallet.
Although I think, the prices of Windows 7 WILL drop anyway past that period. According to some magazines and the internet, even people pirating Windows consider getting a legit copy this time. So if MS just lowered the price they would dominate the market even more ...

Tomorrow will be interesting to see, how much they will charge here, when Win741 also will be available to non-US students

That's honestly really weird. You seem to have pretty bad luck with computers.

I've been running it for 12 days and had very few problems. It's been pretty great for me.

I've been running Windows 7 Professional x64 since about mid-August.
I have to say the only problems that I did have was some sort of weird memory error that might have had to do with a driver, and having some applications crashing for various reasons. But otherwise, it's been pretty smooth sailing. I'd say even more so than my previous (OEM) Vista install on this machine and definitely better than my previous Vista (x86) machine.

I'd say that at this point, I would definitely not switch back to Vista. It's great. Windows 7 is probably the best OS that Microsoft has come out with ever.

I'd be puzzled if I had a terrible driver... I used the same drivers (except they were Vista counterparts) on 7 that I did on XP, and XP ran along quite smoothly.

I did fix the disconnection issues I was having by installing 7... though, to be honest, I'd much rather have those issues and a stable system.

Honestly, I wouldn't blame drivers. It sounds more like either you just have really bad luck, or there's something in your computer which 7 doesn't like running on at all.

Do realize 7 was technically in BETA for a while up until now (and RC shortly after that but still).

I know a few minor issues that I had, and even hardware issued were fixed by installing the real deal. (One was fixed by updating the BIOS, you may want to look into that)

In the end it's not wrong to stick with XP. If your machine supports it and there's enough problems to make 7 not worth it, make the logical choice.

He was using the RTM version of 7 (the exact same one I'm using now) and just ended up having a shitload of problems with it anyway. I'd also use XP if 7 gave me this many problems; but it's fine for me.

I figured I'd post in here as well that I'm an idiot who did not install the video card drivers from the CD that came with said card.

7's running just as well as XP was, now.

Yeah, bad drivers will kill any system.

It wasn't that bad for me, but I did need video drivers to get a screen resolution that was decent.

That might be why. I had downloaded the video drivers -before- installing 7, because I didn't think I'd be able to get a decent resolution or Aero or anything without them.

Later on, 7 did work fine but I installed them anyway the first thing I did.

I don't have my full 1152x864 resolution back just yet, but 1024x768 is more than livable for me for the time being.

I only have one major issue left: I'm using a wireless keyboard/mouse combo, and my computer locks itself when it's been idle for an extended period of time (5 hours). When I get back to try to use it, though, no keyboard or mouse input works. XP and Ubuntu, as far as I'm aware, didn't quite have these problems... anyone know what's up? :|

If it's needed, it's the Cordless Desktop EX100. I'd really hate to go back to my old mouse and keyboard, since I always tended to knock them down all the time...

In the power settings panel you can set it up to not sleep after a certain amount of time. Like Vista it hides the "High Performance" power preset by default and puts you on "Balanced" automatically, but you can also set up a custom preset.

As for mouse and keyboard input not working, it's likely that your USB receiver is set to not be allowed to wake the machine from sleep, or it's set so that it can be "turned off to save power." You can configure that in the Device Manager.
