So my mom went to the supermarket today (a Giant) and saw hot dogs on sale. She said she was a bit suspicious why hot dogs would be on sale and checks the expiration date. They expired on August 1, 11 days ago.

So Giant is trying to sell expired items now? Just because they're placed on sale with a buy-1-get-1-free deal doesn't mean it's right to sell expired goods...

I say you sue them. If people can sue for a misorder, why not sue for expired foods?

In all seriousness, I'd like to see how they answer to a question about this.

People will still buy them...even knowing that they are old. They've cheap, who cares, right?

It happens occasionally, happened at the Martin's I worked at. Sometimes when we receive them they're expired, and we don't end up checking right away because we've gotta get them unpacked.

When a customer gets them and they're no longer good, we exchanged for one that is good without a problem. When they saw one that was old and couldn't find a good one, I actually searched the aisle personally and even went into the stock room to find more.

All you gotta do is say something usually.

Not all foods are inedible after the expiration date. Hot dogs, though, I'd have to wonder.

If you eat them that day, aren't they fine?

But a bunch, and have a barbecue. Burn the shit out of them.

Hotdogs are precooked, and I'm pretty sure that that makes them safe for a whi-- wait a sec...

Last time I bought hotdogs, the expiration date on them was for several months after the purchase date...

...

Meaning that those are OLD.

Oh god, that's how my mom thinks. "Who cares if it's shitty, broken, moldy, etc as long as it's on sale!"

I think you're confusing "expiry" and "best before." I doubt the hot dogs had expired; for one, the date is an estimate in the first place. Two, it's not like on July 31st, they were perfect, and then on August 1st, they became zombifying maggot-food. Third, if they were frozen over a long period of time, the expiry date becomes later.

Chances are, these hot dogs were still perfectly fine, just as long as they were consumed relatively quickly.

Maybe, but I think that I'd like to see hot dogs on sale that haven't gone past their expiration date.

Everything is on sale at Grocery Outlet.

I've been shopping there forever.

Pfffft, they're fine. I've eaten a hot dog that I left in a car for a while over the course of the following week.

My guess is that it would depend on how it's packaged... If it's those precooked tinned hotdogs that are stored in brine or whatever they're stored in then they'ed last a LOT longer after the expiry/best before date than the uncooked versions that supermarkets sell.

I've bought yogurt on sale that expired the day after I bought it... ...but I just ate that yogurt immediately. Didn't taste off, although the yogurt I buy doesn't really rot... it just loses its fluffiness and becomes kind of gloopy. Same taste, but mouth-feel is kind of gross.

Mouthfeel, to me, is a bigger issue than taste when it's on the bad end of the spectrum. It's why I can't eat any non-starch vegetable; the mouthfeel is just horrendous.

Ew.

I personally don't consume anything if it's past the date printed on it, whether it's Best Before or Expiry. Quality, sanitary, and taste; those are my big things with food. If any of those three properties are lacking, it's no good.

This leads to lots of tension between me and my father, because he is proud of his claim to having eaten moldy bread before... urk. I feel sick just thinking about it.

Well, I would carefully follow the expiration date on some foods (cottage cheese, for example), but on hot dogs, I don't know, they're probably pumped full of so much artificial preservatives and stuff that they'd probably last a long, long time.

Were you the same guy who has to wash out his pitchers ten times before he fills them with juice because he's scared there might still be soap suds in it?

I'll rinse them ten times, but that's only because I know my grandparents don't do a good enough job and any food cooked in there tastes remarkably like soap
