I used it for a few days and I had no issues as well, but some of the UI just bugged me. There were a lot of cool improvements but it felt like a step back from XP in general. It was pretty sluggish as well.

I'm happy with 7 now since it feels like a combination of what I liked about both. Everything is pretty speedy and a lot of the UI is far better, like the start menu and taskbar. (Per-process window grouping and dragging is really useful!) And I love Aero.

It was a graphics card problem, but still. I wanted to play Half-Life 2 without it BSODing, dammit.

XP's default theme is gross. Lassekongo83 on DA makes some of my favourite XP themes. I was using this before my XP installation died: http://lassekongo83.deviantart.com/art/Striped-VS-1-1-update-114617379

Now I'm using Aero in Windows 7 which is really quite nice. I love eye candy so the glassy windows and animations make me happy.

Royale (both Normal and Zune) are both great themes - I used them for a while but I got tired of them. I moved onto some random WindowBlinds themes, Luna Element (Also an excellent theme) and then Lassekongo's themes after someone (Bloodstar I think? Not sure) referred me to them.

I've been having issues like crazy with XP. And now my mother's being an idiot and won't work something out so I can get 7, so I'm trapped on XP!

I'm tempted to just throw Vista on this thing. Seriously, it's so much better than XP from my experiences that it's mindblowing.

What does your mom have to do with it? Is it that you can't get broadband?

I'm pretty sure that 7 would run even better for you, since it's the same base structure as Vista, just optimised a lot.

Royale Noir was an unfinished and unreleased MS theme. The above linked version is a hacked version (So it needs the UXTheme patch) which is finished up and polished, and also includes normal Royale. Pretty cool.

I'm guessing the only custom themes you've seen before (if any) are the typical tacky crap you see to show off theming but which is extremely ugly and totally unusable.

A lot of them are like this but there are a bunch of really cool themes like these. I used to like Silver a lot until I found out about Royale (and later, more custom themes).

It's actually not that hard. Once you have UXTheme.dll patched, that's it - you can just download a theme, extract it and doubleclick on the .msstyles file to apply it.
