I guess I'm just used to maximizing stuff Then again, my resolution is only 1280*800. Sometimes I'll make something smaller to fit an AIM window to the right though.
I only tend to maximize programs which actually benefit from the larger view, like Firefox, Lunar Magic, or Photoshop. Basically, any program that would otherwise require a lot of scrolling or zooming out.

I don't maximize either (or rarely), even the browser window is only set to fill most of the second screen (leaving space for IRC) ... it's also why I don't like the trend to make everything bigger on screen, higher resolutions to me mean more stuff on screen at once
But up to when I had my single 19" at 1280x1024, I did keep most programs maximized and had to use the taskbar (or keep windows on top) a lot more
I maximize most of my windows. Only ones that don't get maxed are games, zsnes, notepad files, SMILE and its hex-related programs, and that's about it. I switch back and forth between windows enough that I don't need to see everything. That and I don't like seeing a lot of visible clutter on my screen. It annoys me.

I used to have this habit. I'd maximise EVERY window I had open. I stopped doing it and I discovered that it's actually better.
Web pages don't look empty and short (because I have a 1680x1050 screen), it's a lot easier to multitask (makes using my netbook hell now though) and I just find it easier. My usual setup is having a bunch of stuff I always keep track on (like chat windows and such) below and any particular window I'm working on (Visual Studio, Notepad++, etc) overlapping part of that.

...Believe it or not, I actually maximize things less on my netbook. I guess my more compact XP theme helps, though.
One thing I hate about Ubuntu Netbook Remix is how things automatically maximize. In fact, I hate most netbook "interfaces". It's a computer, not a fucking iPhone. I want to use it like a computer.

I have no idea how you can live with that. The small space is so constricting for me considering that I'm used to normally having it huge.

I usually use both Alt+Tab and the taskbar. I hate how I don't have a choice on my netbook though - I'm forced to use Alt+Tab always because the touchpad is just far too slow.
edit: Oh right, clicking on windows works too. I use that most of the time for stuff that's on my screen and not minimised/hidden.
