Poll question pretty much explains it. Feel free to post what you think as well.

I'm on Windows 7 and I left it on, but I ran the Cleartype Tuner to make it look better.
I used to be on XP, but I used it there as well. I've been using it for years - I can't live without it. It makes text so much easier to read.

ClearType is Windows's anti-aliasing feature Basically, it makes the text appear smoother so it isn't noticeably made of pixels.

I've been using it (+ tuner) since 2002, when I first got Windows XP ... even on a CRT, I still thought it looked better than none/standard

And now the newer fonts like Vista's tend to look like crap at smaller sizes without it ...

To enable it on XP:

Right click on your desktop. Click Properties.

Go to the Appearance tab and click Effects. Check "Smooth the edges of screen fonts" (Might not be exactly that, but similar) and pick ClearType from the dropdown box. Click OK twice.

If you don't like it, change the dropdown box back to Standard. A lot of people seem to hate it for some reason, but I find it far easier to read text with it.

This thing makes it even better: ClearType Tuner PowerToy; 2MB (For XP - I'm pretty sure Vista already includes it. I know 7 definitely does.)

I don't like the way certain fonts looked without anti-aliasing, especially serif fonts like Times New Roman

Seeing pixellated Verdana and Arial tends to remind me of my old message board days though

Same! For some reason, pixelated Verdana/Arial/MS Sans Serif/Tahoma are all very memorable for me (especially at specific sizes).

I actually installed Windows 98 in a VM a while ago and installed Office 97 on it and a bunch of other stuff. Purely out of nostalgia to relive our first computer. Does that make me weird? I barely even used it.

(I did use Office 97 for a while though to open/edit Office files, shamefully enough. I wrote several documents in it. I have Office 2007 here now just for the fancy UI.)

I'm on XP. I've had it on and have been using the tuner since 2005 and now I can't stand not having it on.

e: of course, that probably has to do with the fact that i'm on an LCD

I'm on XP with it off. It looks awful on CRTs.

Linux's antialiasing looks nice ,though, regardless of monitor type.

I'm on Snow Leopard. Depending on the dpi and resolution, font smoothing is determined automatically (you used to be able to set the amount of smoothing manually in the appearance preferences but now you can't. grr.) Generally things are really readable, and look really good.

On XP I turn ClearType off if I don't have the tuner (the default smoothing setting drives me nuts, it looks awful on this monitor) but I always leave it on in Vista and 7 because they look strange without it.

I guess it's a matter of taste, but OS X's font smoothing drives me insane.

It looks amazing on large text, but it's far too blurry for me to use on regular text. It's usable, but I find ClearType is a lot sharper and easier to read. It's a good compromise between no smoothing and OS X's.

I'm on XP and have it off. ClearType makes everything look horribly blurry and I can't really stand it. It hurts my eyes.

Just wondering, are you using a CRT or LCD?

I'm assuming it's on since font looks smooth. I haven't noticed a different in years though.

Before you start wondering, yes it is a normal LCD screen.

Yeah, you're on Vista. It's been on in all the desktop screenshots you've posted.

Vista looks terrible without it. Segoe UI and the other new fonts are pretty much unreadable.

Figured that was the case.
