And then as soon as someone is done, all the rest would be screwed ... or like RedSnifit, starting it at 24 words and always having to double it (up to 3072 last night, now doubled again) before he had a chance to post

I don't have graphic design skills either, actually I'm good with building something out of objects like level editing, but not with building something out of individual pixels.

Yeah, but I always end up with repetitive or unoriginal or empty designs. Even then, they just feel boring and aren't as fun to play as other hacks or Nintendo's original levels.

I think the ROM hacking community tends to put super-high expectations on newer ROM hackers

I actually prefer old-style levels-only hacks over fancy stuff with all-new custom graphics and ASM changes.

I've always liked both types, but the fancy stuff seems even better to me. Especially SMB1 hacks like Extra Mario Bros, XXXX, Giabbit Hunting and so on.

Of course level-only hacks (And tileset editing now) is the only thing I can do on NSMB.. but I'm not good at even that.

Extra Mario Bros backs up the new things with some very well designed gameplay. That's what makes it so good!

But... you should hack for the sake of having fun. Not making something that everyone will think is good.

I did like DahrkDaiz's Mario Adventure, actually

Usually though, it feels like people change graphics just because they think nobody wants the hack with the original graphics

I'm a perfectionist though. I can't have fun hacking if I'm ending up making crappy levels, and if my hack isn't fun to play (even for me).

It actually took me a long time to play some games. I just only recently played Mario Adventure, SMB3 and SMW all the way through. Strange right?

It also made me realise how overhyped and unfun NSMB is. Especially compared to SMW. Sure, I shouldn't be talking, but still..

I didn't like the power-ups in NSMB other than the classic super mushroom and fire flower Mini Mario is vulnerable and awkward to control, Mega Mario works in very few levels despite Mega Mushrooms being common-ish, and it seems much easier to kill oneself with Shell Mario than use the power-up for its intended purpose.
