On the other hand, the United States is the only industrialized nation without a national policy to promote high-speed broadband, according to a study released in August by the Communications Workers of America, the country's largest media union.

Yeah, some of the asshat things the United States does (or doesn't do, for that matter) makes me wonder why people are wondering why America is losing its status as a global superpower.

Yeah, sometimes I feel like I live in a country that's stuck in the past

The USA tends to put corporate and business interests above everything else, which IMO hurts pretty much everyone except those super-rich CEOs who don't really need more money anyway.

On-topic, go Finland Maybe I can live there someday...

We in the US are ASSHOLES to the rest of the world. We've been learning about recent policy decisions in one of my classes and compared to the rest of the world, we are just horrible.

The country is aiming for speeds that are 100 times faster -- 100 megabit per second -- for all by 2015.
100Mbps for everyone in 5-6 years ... and the fastest currently available here (from Videotron at least) is 50Mbps (1Mbps upload) + bandwidth limit

It's actually a bit surprising how many people are still stuck with dialup, with the Web 2.0 trends and video streaming that pretty much require broadband

Some people live in rural areas where broadband hasn't been set up My parents' village got it only a couple of years ago, IIRC.

I can understand why everyone may not be able to get out of dial-up internet. It is a big country after all.

Still not an excuse, though.

Moronic parents and areas out in the middle of nowhere are more common than you might expect.

I know someone on 28k dialup. Fuck, just thinking about it makes my stomach turn.

For a while, I had dialup to save money because I thought DSL access would come any day now. I eventually gave up waiting and sprung for cable.

See, if AOL were really cheap, I could comprehend sticking with it.

AOL is $15 / month. Verizon's lowest-end connection, iirc, is $18 / month.

Three dollar difference. 3.73kbps / dollar for AOL, 56.88kbps / dollar for DSL at 1mbps.

We should be paying a single fucking dollar for AOL, seriously.

I have even OFFERED to pay the difference. My mom's response?

"WHAT GOOD IS DSL WITHOUT ELECTRICITY?"

It's not like three fucking dollars is going to make that big a difference. Especially if she's not paying any more or less... I'd be the one paying that little extra bit.

Sigh. When will she learn common sense and value? This is one thing that is ACTUALLY worth it.

I guess it'd be different if she had any clue about the difference between (bad) dialup and any broadband ... my parents aren't exactly rich either and still got decent broadband at 3-4x the cost since years (although I paid the difference with the upgrade to 10Mbps and later 30Mbps)

I mostly meant areas where broadband still isn't available, but I guess it could go the other way around too ... why does so much stuff now require broadband (not only page bloat but also huge downloads) when not everyone can get it, they don't exactly have the "CPU/RAM is cheap" excuse

I know a guy in my electricity class who has 56k still, but is seriously considering getting either cable or DSL. Not sure which, but he really wants out of dialup.

The problem is that America is too big and has too much bureaucracy to get the right thing done the right way. Not to mention, as Bloodstar said, we have a lot of ignorant and/or uninformed people.

Maybe we wouldn't have as many uninformed people if we had national high-speed internet, but it would take years to get something like that passed and implemented here, assuming we even had the money to pay for it.

Not to mention the fact that the US mainly uses trucks to transport shit over railroads. (Seriously, what the hell!?!??)

Also, broadband is not the same as "modem" you can run phone on broadband and, in general, much faster transport speed on other data. The problem would be that you would have to put in a new cable, one that replaces the analog phone cable, most likely.
So, setting up broadband can get very expensive.

There are, of course, other options then broadband and analog but... some people call those broadband too, even though they are not.

And I am still stuck on dial-up when I go home some weekends. :/

I hate red tape stoping high speed from coming to my home. D:

I blame the lack of social progress in the US to the loads of extreme social conservatives that equate anything either bad or good to God's will and think religion should be compulsory in school, that don't know how to turn on a computer and the remnants of the huge anti-communism era during the cold war.

I hope I didn't offend anyone with that comment but that's what I think. And more on topic, viva Finland! I've always wanted to go to Finland, maybe not to live there but I'd really like to visit.

That's fairly naïve of you. The lack of social progress comes from fear of change, and the rich people who have an interest in the status quo. Those wacky conservative you've mentioned don't have much clout; it's the jackasses who are bought by the big companies who want to keep things how they are (these people are usually moderate to conservative) who donate to politicians and causes, be they Democrats or Republicans, who stop social change.
