I was actually referring to New Super Mario Bros. for the DS in that case

It's really easy to max out the score in some games if you kinda grind. Like Kirby's Adventure, where not only can you play stages over and over again, but also there's no level timer and enemies respawn.

Or Wizards & Warriors, where I used the Game Genie to give unlimited lives or health or something and maxed out the score at 999999 without even trying I guess they figured nobody could beat it without using a continue (which zeroes out your score).

Also in Kirby's adventure, while the score shows a limited number of zeros it actually expands when you reach 10000000. In fact, it overflows at 167184630 (or "G7184630" as there's only one extra digit for the game.)

I've seen those, but the 1-point chest is just a slap in the face.

I once played SMW for most of the day when I was younger and had a fairly high score by the end, thanks to level/1-Up grinding.

Yeah, I meant the first, most left digit in scores. Just thinking what purpose that (probably) zero has, if you never can turn this one to 1 or a higher numeral. Maybe the developers wanted to prepare if someone racks up score incredibly to not make their progress glitch or something else.

Although, in the mentioned Mario and Castlevenia parts score doesn't play a huge role anyway, as it got reset if you power on your machine - excluding games with save features

9999990 in Super Mario World is really easy (and fast) if you know a certain glitch In SMB1, it's also possible to get 9999950 in 1-1 (after beating the game) by getting a 1UP from a shell kick and dying, repeating over and over ...

And yeah, having many more digits than could ever be reached is pretty silly (with leading 0's that is, it's fine without) ... I've seen a few, but a recent one I can remember is Retrogame Challenge's freeplay mode where it keeps track of various stats (game clears, game overs, other things depending on the game), and each of them has 7 digits with leading 0's (0,000,000), so good luck beating a game 1 million times

Hearts in Castlevania II are given a 4-digit counter, but they max out at 0256

It seems rather silly. It would make sense to be 255 as that's the highest number a 1-byte unsigned integer can hold, whereas going up just one more to 256 would need a 9th bit and probably use a whole new byte. The weirdness is just compounded by the zero

Probably would be easy to hack it to go over 256 hearts... but what's the purpose? Off the top of my head, I'd guess you'd need around 1000 (give or take) hearts to purchase everything required to beat the game...
