Do you usually care about or pay attention to scores in games?
I do for some reason. I think I like watching numbers increase Especially in never-ending games like pinball or Tetris, but I'll watch the score in Mario and Kirby and such as well. When I was a kid, I usually ignored "that big number", but later I started paying attention to it.

 | I usually enjoy taking note of milestones that I pass such as 100,000 or 1,000,000 in games such as Super Mario Bros. or in arcade games. A few years ago when I was trying to beat 1943: The Battle of Midway for the NES I would usually use my score to tell me how far I was through the last level since near the end a lot of things start looking the same .

Super Paper Mario doesn't count, does it?
No, I've never really cared about scores, even in arcade games. I'm not very competitive.

It really depends on the game. If it's like Tetris or some other puzzler, then I'll probably check just how high of a score I can get.
Otherwise, I just ignore the number. |

That's pretty obvious I really only ever pay attention in Tetris, and it's usually only a passing glance, not something I'm specifically aiming for. In fact I guess you can say I nearly never look at score unless I'm aiming to achieve something from it.

I remember always scoring about 700000 in SMB1 whenever I did my warpless runs, but I wasn't going for score or speed (about 45 minutes)
Otherwise it depends on the game and whether the score has a real purpose (high score, lives, etc.) ...

Only when the score affects the gameplay... Like getting lives or unlock stuff.

Mainly if I'm looking to achieve something (get on a high score list or unlock something) or if I'm seeing how many points I need for an extra life.

If there's a score in a game, then I'll usually keep track of it to see just how high of a score I get. I once got over a million points in SMAS's SMB1. Took a picture of it even.

Yeah, I remember being surprised to learn that SMB1 can add a 7th digit to the score
I usually take the score more seriously if it gets me something though. Like I'll spend a while killing multiple zombies with the holy water in Castlevania for points, because I know I can get an extra life eventually doing that

 | I often tend to care about it when it's completely useless.
The score actually has an important purpose in Mega Turrican, despite seeming useless: If you have a "00" anywhere in your score, except the beginning... after completing the first area you can go into a normally hidden one. I've actually figured out a way to do this flawlessly.
...Of course, the area is there anyway in the Amiga port.

I don't care unless it's used for something I need. Your characters level/experience points on the other hand...

Yeah, EXP are important
Well, except in Faxanadu, where they just give your more money and make the wing boots worse
I've actually played a game in which the final boss takes fewer hits if you score more points

I like to get something for beating up tons of enemies, regardless of how useful it is!

I don't like leading zeros at all in scores (early games, although the Atari didn't have that issue since mostly scores didn't go into the millions) - it fells, well, "null". Especially it seems abtrocious in games where you never get the first digit even to turn to "1", then asking - what purpose?
By the way, the score in Super Castlevania IV has nine digits. Being quite a long time ago when I beat it: Is it actually possible to get 100,000,000+ points by normal means?
Think about Pinball for NES. It isn't score, but the life counter can go higher than "09" as the two digits suggest, but as in one video from Xkeeper he said that leading zero actually is hardcoded
Otherwise I only care in pinball games for score, since ... well it is the sole purpose, even in those which has little adventure elements in, like bosses in Dragon's Fury or Kirby's Pinball Land. But, in Touhou I usually want to see that nice one or even nigher at the far left in the score display. Of(f) course this requires good multipliers, so grazing a whole lot and collecting items at a high level on the screen is required, but I suck badly here.

Atlantis no Nazo has that covered for you with that 1-point treasure chest.

I think Surlent may have meant the leftmost digit. I'm not sure. Some games start you off with like 00000000 when getting to 10 million takes forever (New SMB, anyone?).
Having digits at the end always be 0 is pretty common though I think it started with pinball or skee-ball games where score was counted mechanically and couldn't rise a lot at once, so they'd put a bunch of 0s at the end to make the score look big. Then, it just got carried over to later games because of tradition, probably.

Yeah, I wasn't sure either... but you can do that in SMB if you really want. Koopa trick in 3-1, just jump off before the 1-Up's start racking up.
