I'd say she was fairly well-known, at least  Not a hugely prominent member, but she posted fairly steadily for years.

Actually, I use it fairly frequently. The school tends to use E-mail a lot in addition to Blackboard and whatever else it has, and it's my preferred method of sending files 
In this case, the contact info I had for her consisted of an E-mail address

I never seem to get chain letters. Mainly because most people don't know my email adress...

I've rarely had much trouble with spam, actually. The main times were when I had a Yahoo! E-mail account and after I signed up for some weird offers to try to make money easily online
I do get spam postal mail though. Am I the only person who calls it spam in that case?

I think the use of "spam" in that kind of email in general is wrong. Spam stands for "stupid, pointless, annoying message". While they ARE that, it is used as if it were a synonym of "crap advertising".
Actually, by that rule 95% of the emails I get on the accounts people know are spam.
