It's pretty obvious once you think about it.

And for the longest time I thought that the answer to anything divided by zero was "Error 2" .

How do you split 5 apples between 0 people?

I used to think you could add a number to the number system similar to i, I think I called it j, for 1/0.

No, j is really just how electrical engineers write i (since i means current there)

Yup. On that note, I hate complex math.

Yeah, sometimes i is called j.

I think there's also a type of number called a quaternion, which has 4 components (like how a complex number has 2, real and imaginary).

"Quaternions" are just a fancy name for 4-dimensional vectors, mainly used in physics to represent a point in Minkowski spacetime.

On another note, I sort of see why such a definition for zero division is plausible. You see, for real numbers, it's customary to say that lim 1/x as x approaches zero is infinity. This is not quite true, however- for the actual limit does not exist. What do exist are two separate limits depending on whether x is positive or negative; that is,

lim [x->0+] = ∞
lim [x->0-] = -∞

So when x:=0, 1/x can be either positive or negative infinity and as such remains undefined.

However, this is not the case for complex numbers. If we take lim [z->0] 1/z, recall that z can be written as z= |z|e, where |z| is the modulus (magnitude) of z. Thus, lim [z->0] 1/z becomes

lim [z->0] 1/|z|e

Now, as z approaches zero, the result approaches a complex number with infinite modulus, but since θ does not depend on the magnitude of z, the argument can be any angle. This matches the definition of complex infinity- infinite magnitude, but unknown argument.

I always thought it equaled E.

That's what my calculator said! Calculators never lie!

Get a better calculator, Colin?

Actually, I think even my graphing calculator would give "ERR: DIVIDE BY 0" or "ERR:UNDEFINED". I wonder if any give NAN like many computer programs

Old calculators would just say E.

And then you sit there trying to figure out what E could possibly mean and why you need to clear everything before calculating anything. :\

Yeah, I always wondered why you had to clear the error. Why not just have it so that, if there's an E and you push (say) 5, the error is automatically removed and the 5 is entered?

That's not division though, that's subtraction

OK, let's say it was a vat of toxic waste instead of a pizza
