Anyway, this is just a small argument I was having with my sister; she's still a year or two away from college. She is still undecided as to what course of study she wishes to pursue (if she goes to college at all) and that makes things a little more difficult, because she is not sure what her needs are in a computer yet. There's always the solution of using the hand-me-down 2001 machine she has right now (a Power Mac G4,) but it's starting to exhibit some problems from the age of its components.

In my circumstances, I'd get a cheap desktop with at least a little power behind it and supplement it with a netbook. That way I have redundancy in an emergency, and something small to carry around containing a subset of my desktop's files. For things requiring a little more muscle, I'd just use the desktop machine. There is also the added cost benefit; instead of a full-featured laptop with the features I'd need for a design degree (which could be expensive; I tend to ask a lot of the machines I use), a $500 desktop off newegg could handle the heavy stuff easily, and the netbook could handle simpler tasks like notes or office-suite-type stuff just fine.

Anyway ... what would you do?

Desktop + netbook. I actually kinda do this, except I use both computers for the same thing.

Netbooks are a lot more powerful than people give them credit for.

I like the convenience of laptops, so I'd go with the full-featured notebook

Many schools expect students to have laptops, and having all files on 1 computer is easier to deal with, IMO.

Desktop/netbook, so one survives if the other fails, and so you don't have as large a target for thieves to steal.

I'd go with the desktop/netbook combo, even if I find the netbook to be a useless piece of crap. I'm sorry, but I don't find any use for the netbook as of now, though it is nice that it's cheap ($200).

I'd say go with the full featured notebook instead of worrying about whether or not it will meet the requirements of what she needs.

full featured notebook because many people don't like moving things between computers. Make sure you sister invests in a good laptop chain lock. If your computer is not very computer savvy, an apple notebook will do fine. Perhaps there will be a tablet version by the time she gets to college.

Desktop and netbook. You get a backup, and you also get more processing power overall for the same price. If your school has a network of some sort, you could always set up a file server on your desktop and leave that running in the dorm, and access the files from the netbook remotely, so you don't have to deal with any synchronization nonsense.

Shiny new layout!
----------------------------------------------------

Desktop and (even though I hate them) netbook.

Believe me, after having lost one of them to a faulty graphics card last year, having a backup computer is a GODSEND.

Not to mention, remote desktop solves every problem.
