Do you have any old habits that you have trouble breaking?

Me, I still don't double post because it was frowned upon/disallowed at Acmlm's I1

Also, I have a tendency to use the first 2 or 3 letters of a URL in the address bar and click on the Web site rather than using zillions of bookmarks (I hate having a bookmark list that's so big that it scrolls). I recently added Jul to my actual bookmarks list, but I still tend to type "ju" and click on Jul

I do that a lot with URL's I often visit, hardly got any bookmarks

For example:
- "ac" = Jul latest posts
- "ac" down x2 = board2 latest posts
- "y" = YouTube
- "dov" = dOvetastic Microwave Theater (yet I could simply subscribe ...)
- "vg" = VGMusic new uploads
- "go" = Google

I do the same when running programs or going to folders, I rarely ever use the Start menu or desktop shortcuts (and only use Quick Launch for the few I use more) ... for example, to run FCEUX:
- Win+R, "f:", Enter (open F:)
- "emu", Enter, "nes", Enter, "fceux", Enter (go to F:\emu\nes\fceux)
- End, Up, Enter (open the second last file, which happens to be fceux.exe)
All of this in about 5 seconds, without using the mouse

Or when posting, I always seem to end sentences with or , or put 2 together with "..." ... like this

I never use the tongue smiley, but I do tend to omit end punctuation from sentences with smileys after them

I used to use the ellipsis a lot...now not so much...

Here's a weird one

Back in the late '90s, my parents had an ant infestation. Big black ants in the kitchen For years afterward, whenever I got a straw, I'd look through it to make sure there were no ants in it.

Maybe straws themselves are a habit for me. I can drink something without a straw, but I'm used to them

I abuse :p to the point of absurdity.
I chew on the collars of my shirts.
I generally don't put my legs on the floor when using an office chair. I put my legs up and spin in circles, constantly, instead.
I lean back so much on office chairs I break the backs off, even though I'm 115 lbs.
I pace around constantly when thinking, speaking, or eating ice cream.
I always do things at the weirdest intervals, usually manic do-everything-at-once periods after days and hours of doing nothing at all.
I constantly spell words with double ls where I shouldn't, e.g. travelling should be traveling.
I pick at my mustache and twirl the hairs of it constantly.
I take my sunglasses and spin them by the left or right stick part. I once did this so much it caused one pair of sunglasses to fall apart. In Las Vegas, of all places.
I make clicking noises in wide open spaces to test if there is an echo.
I constantly check the rings on my fingers, arranging them to look good and clinking them.
I chew with my mouth open and sound like a trash compactor when I'm eating.
I skip, jog, slide and strafe around when walking, instead of moving normally.
I constantly check to make sure I have all my possessions before leaving school.
I put the most important things I have in drawers so stuffed they get lost. I keep doing it anyway for no good reason.
I constantly use <?PHP even though I never remember to use it repeatedly, which is useless (PHP things will want it everywhere or not care; not in-between.)
I constantly stretch and crack my fingers and toes.
I often try to whistle (I can't do it very well) when bored.
I talk over other people and often begin rambling about crazy things in a discussion.
I can't stop inspecting the roof of my room after the invasion of one wasp after another onto my roof over the course of a year or two made me paranoid about it.
If given gum, I rabidly chew through all of it all too quickly.
And so on.

I pop my knuckles, wrists, ankles, chest, and neck whenever I think of them (I just did it now).
I keep my bookmarks in the bookmark toolbar and keep my bookmarks 2 inches from the bottom, any more and I'll throw them in the toolbar if I have room or delete them.
A lot of the time, I'll abuse commas, sometimes to the point of absurdity, my sentences can get incredibly long this way, I don't know why I do it, sometimes I go back and make multiple sentences out of it while proofreading.
I compulsively change the color of my WoW mouse, I'm never satisfied with it.
I chew my nails.
I used to chew my toenails but I'm not as flexible anymore and my feet stink sometimes.
I curl my toes under my feet and rest them like that whenever I sit, but I when sitting at a desk back in school, I would put one of the front legs of it over my toes and sit like that, I still don't know why.
Porn. Randomly. Don't ask.
I enjoy Blacks once in a while and I was pissed when they were banned from the US... Thankfully they came out with "cigars" that bypass the new law.
I check first four bookmarks in my toolbar to check for updates and usually read/browse through it all (yes, even Jul).
I grind my teeth like a mofo.
I still drink Capri-Suns all the time.
I don't know if I would consider this a habit, but I have terrible insomnia. I sometimes lie in bed with my eyes closed for 4+ hours before I can even fall asleep.
I have more but they haven't yet come to mind.

EDIT:
I remembered a big one: Whenever I'm playing a game with decent music, I'll sing, hum or whistle the tune that's playing. I'll pick up on the music very quickly and be humming it while away from the game too. I do this so habitually that 90% of the time I don't even realize it! I remembered it when my friend told me to stop whistling the Brewfest theme from WoW when I was playing, he said it was annoying as hell!

/☢/CAUTION/☢/

When listening music (even if it's a song in my head) I will pound with my hand on anything at the rythm of whatever I am listening, usually a tin can, the table, or my knee. Each finger and where/how it pounds representing a certain note+channel. In the case it's in my head, it can go on for hours.

Thanks to guitar hero, (even though I'm not that into it and have only played the third one a few times,) it was still enough for me to develop a habit of moving my fingers on the steering wheel on my car to the music playing in my cd player, just as if I were playing it using the fret buttons.

I do this with some pages. At the same time I also have a bunch of the sites I use most often in my bookmarks toolbar, and a LOT of pages (Although more so stuff I've found and wanted to remember for later, not sites I use often) in my bookmarks.

I do this for some programs. It's weird.. I have most of them in my main Start Menu accessible with just two clicks, but then there are a bunch which I'll only run using the Run dialog box, or by navigating directly to them (when I could just as easily make a start menu shortcut).

Also this. I abuse ellipses (ellipsises?) all the time. I'll also use them to indicate surprise... like "... what?". (Oh look, I used one again there)

I chew my nails.

All. The. Time.

As for some which weren't already posted...
- I can get songs stuck in my head really easily. Just a mention of a song will get it playing over and over in my head, if I know it. And don't even get me started on Taylor Swift - You Belong With me...
- I'll organise stuff on my computer terribly. I'll start out pretty well, but then end up with a dump. My computer runs a web server - its htdocs folder contains over 1.2gb of crap, completely unorganised. I even store ROM hacking docs and stuff there.
- I'll change typing styles depending on who I'm talking to, or where I'm talking.
- Extremely forgetful.

Can't really think of any others..

Where do I begin?

I don't have too many irl habits but I have a lot of conversational or otherwise social habits that tend
to bleed over in to irc.

Worst one is I tend to be rather immature. Very noticable on irc, pretty noticable when I get comfortable with someone in person. This causes a lot of problems since people tend to be pretty drawn away from a 20 year old who acts like a 12 year old. Yes, I know I'm aware of it and that I should be able to do something about it but I have very poor self control so it's a slow, gradual improvement.

I poke a lot.

I'm extremely lazy.

I tend to talk too quietly or unclearly, or stumble on my words.

There are more habits and quirks about me but it's hard for me to recall them or sometimes even notice without someone saying something.

This happens to me all the time. So much so in fact that my teacher would have to tell me to stop in class sometimes ;

I also do the keyboard shortcuts and autocompletes a lot as well. I don't keep a lot of bookmarks.
I always prefer to have my Windows UI very compact-looking. I prefer having a lot of viewing space to having a lot of eye candy. I moved my bookmarks toolbar in Firefox up next to the menu bar to facilitate this.
Another thing I tend to do is to work with everything maximized. I don't really like splitting screen space between two separate apps.

Also, Metal_Man88, you sound like a really interesting person, heh.

Let's see...

  • I chew my fingernails. A lot. I've been chewing them ever since I was like, 3 or so.
  • I habitually visit whatever websites are in my address bar's pull-down history. I still find myself browsing PureZC out of habit and for no other reason. Also, I still check Exalted Legion sometimes despite the fact that it doesn't even exist anymore.
  • I pace a lot whenever I'm either a) nervous; or b) lost in thought.
  • I have this tendency to write posts on message boards and then preview them repeatedly and double-check everything meticulously. Then I cancel it and pretend I never wrote it because I'm convinced everything I write is stupid.
  • I overuse the face a lot. I hardly ever use any other emoticons unless I seriously am worried about how what I said will be taken. I loathe using unless it's absolutely necessary (eg. to denote a joke), and won't even touch any of the anime-ish ones (like or ).

And probably others that I can't think of off of the top of my head...

I never really understood what the tongue emoticon is supposed to mean, actually

The smileys I use are:
in a pair in that order

although it's ^_~ most places.

I prefer the Asian-style smileys, I guess

As for a habit: I tend to refresh the Jul main page to check for new posts rather than using IRC, and sometimes I refresh something else: the JCS results, an Acmlm's archive main page, even Wikipedia

I have a bad habit of expecting good things out of strangers. I've had far too many bad experiences in the past few weeks with socially broken morons who don't know how to show an ounce of respect.

Most of my other bad habits aside from losing track of the time have faded since I graduated. I don't bite my nails anymore, and it's in fact very annoying sometimes when I start typing real fast. My fingernails get stuck in the cracks in between the keys and I usually have to pull them out with my other hand. God forbid I get both stuck at the same time.
