MotM October: Cirvante

Please note that Cirvante is very busy with school and we were unable to finish.

Anya: Would you be interested in being Jul MotM for October?

Cirvante: I assume that's a rhetorical question, Nya-chan. Of course I'd love to.

Also, bonus points for being close to my birthday

Anya: Fantastic. So, first off, congrats on being Jul’s MotM for October. Let’s start with your username. What’s the story behind it?

Cirvante: Well, back when I originally joined Acmlm's in '05, I was currently obsessed with Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis, one of the best SRPGs ever made. Both my username and my original alt are were based on the twins Lethe and Cirvante, who manipulated the war from behind the scenes in order to precipitate the revival of the Sacred Demon. My other alt, Lenoire, refers to one of my SF characters I'm currently using in HSH and RoSD, though I still need to write up her backstory and other relevant information.

Anya: What brought you to Acmlm’s in the first place? And then to Jul?

Cirvante: Back in my high school years, I was pretty big on ROMs and emulation and whatnot. I remember this one site, romreactor.net (RIP), which basically had the entire SNES goodset's worth up for download. Now, back then hacks and translations also counted for the goodset- so naturally, there were pages upon pages of SMW hacks up there. I played through a lot of these, and while most of them were stupid, incomplete, or both, they were pretty fun for the most part.

I came across Acmlm's Board (I2) after playing through FPI's Chaos CompleXX, which had a message box at the end of the hack which basically advertised the place. I joined around April '05, but wasn't really active until around the same time next year, well after the shitstorm that happened after Xk took over. I eventually found the original Justus League completely by accident back when it was still open for registrations (granted, http://xkeeper.shacknet.nu/board/ was totally not conspicuous at all)

Fast-forward to the great split of 2007, where after the drama I basically said 'screw it' and joined all three branches. ||board died, board2 is still sorta active, and well, here I am today

Anya: Are you still into ROMs and emulation today?

Cirvante: Yes, but in a different way. Now that I own a hacked PSP and a couple of DS flashcarts, it's not so much emulating as it is playing pirated games on native hardware. Though I do still use my PSP as a portable emulator machine, heh... just need a bigger stick for it.

Anya: You’re pretty active as far as writing/SF/HSH, where do you get your inspiration from to write?

Cirvante: Ah, this is a tough one... Hmm, how do I describe it...

My writing process mostly arises as a result of me going "What if...?" at stuff I've seen or read. Anything I write is usually influenced by whatever anime I'm watching, or what games I've been playing at the time. For instance, Lost Meridian is heavily inspired by stories like Gundam 00, FMA and dystopian literature, and what I have planned down the line will throw a little Hellsing and Disgaea into the mix.

I will stress, however, that despite basing my writings on so many sources, I don't write fanfiction. I might go as far as cribbing entire concepts and terminology almost whole-sale, but I at least try to keep my settings and characters original.

Anya: Where do you get your characters from? Are they based off of friends/family or just straight out of your mind?

Cirvante: My characters generally follow the same inductive process as my stories, so there's certainly a lot of external media influences involved, though I try to keep their personalities and behavior as fresh as possible. That still wouldn't stop nitpickers from directly comparing them to existing anime/video game characters, though the same can pretty much be said for any fictional character, published or not. In fact, I dare you all to read through these and tell me where they think I got them from, because by this point even I can't tell.

Anya: Ever thought of being a professional writer?

Cirvante: Hahahaha... Actually, no, not really. I don't write quickly or consistently enough to not die of hunger due to lack of publishing royalties. Besides, my passion lies within computer science and engineering, which is thankfully a much more stable job market nowadays. Of course, creative writing is a favorite hobby of mine, so I don't plan to stop any time soon. And hey, who knows, maybe I might get something published down the road. Sounds like fun

Congratulations on being Member of the Month, Cirvante

I remember Chaos Complexx That hack was hilarious, although I remember it getting really hard in the last world. I was disappointed that it jumped to Bowser's Valley or whatever right after the 2nd world, I wanted more of the hack

The one thing that I wanted to ask...and I never got to it.

Why must you torture us with math?

Anya: It's a stress outlet. College math can be rather traumatizing at times, especially Calculus 2 and above. Those were the first courses I've ever scored less than 90 on, so naturally I still rage over it. So to compensate, I take it out on you guys by torturing you with difficult, dense analysis.

And because I love you all so much, here, have some complex integrals:

Holy fuckerpants

I didn't like integrals. All those rules to memorize Ugh. At least derivatives didn't have nearly as many rules.

Looks like my job here is done~

1000 what, though? Dimension-less quantities mean nothing to me! >8D

I followed that fine until the fourth line, then I got lost... unless Re( k-iω ) is 1, not sure how that step is legal ;;;;

but then, I'm rusty on my integrals and things... it's been a year or so since I've taken Calc 3. :x

Nines: Re() is associative, so I'm actually taking the real part of the entire thing, not just k-iw, and expanding them at the end so I could just cross out the i-terms. Much easier that way.

This is actually how my ODEs professor decided to solve a particular example of an oscillatory version of Newton's Law of Cooling, instead of using integration by parts twice. Granted, it's cleaner- but the guy really threw us for a loop since complex analysis isn't taught until the higher-level courses (which only math majors are required to take, and I'm not one of them ).

Honestly, I'm half-expecting him to pull stuff like this out of his ass somewhere down the road.

Yeah, I see that you distribute that ( k-iω ) across everything later, but I think it should be ( k-iω ) / ( k-iω ) so that you're multiplying by the conjugate in the denominator, too... you end up doing that in line 6 but don't write it in line 4 or 5, which confused me.

...but, wait, you're not a math major? That's surprising...

Yep, I'm actually majoring in computer engineering, but our university's curricular sequence requires roughly one third of a maths degree. Five courses down, two to go

Nah, not really... Well, sometimes I am. It really just depends on my current mood/state of mind.

The above doesn't seem cold.
When he goes all mathematical though...
Anyways, congrats Cirvy!

I'm actually a math tutor I don't tutor differential equations though, only up through calculus, plus some other stuff like probability and statistics.

Congratulations Cirvante!

Every time Cirvante posts something about math it always makes me hope that I can be that good at doing calculations some day. I have a basic calculus course next semester although the teacher that I have sucks at teaching so who knows how much of the course content I will actually understand.
