Does anyone remember the Game Genie?

Basically, it was a device you could plug into your NES, SNES, or GB and you would enter codes to change the behaviour of the game Somewhat an old version of hacking.

We only had the NES Game Genie. I originally mostly used it to cheat, like forcing a single power in SMB3 Over time, however, I honed my skills and learned the level layouts and became able to beat many games without the Game Genie. After that, I fiddled with the level-warp codes in SMB1 to get worlds 9, A through Z, and so on I think that's part of what got me into ROM hacking in the early 2000s.

I used the Game Genie all of the time when I was little. I usually consider it my "training wheels" for playing video games, I used the Game Genie to help me out until I felt that I was good enough to play the game without it. Today I just use the Game Genie for causing hilarious glitches or using cheats that can add entertainment back into a game that I've already mastered. I also love using my Game Shark with Pokemon Yellow, I've seen some pretty interesting things due to some of the cheats that I've used with it .

I'm more of a GameShark person myself, really. Back in the day, you'd be hard-pressed to find me playing, say, Star Fox 64 without it.
I never really used it to do anything but make things easier, but my elder brother became quite a master at it, providing many of the codes out there for a select few games.

I have, however, never even seen a Game Genie in person, let alone used one.

I loved the NES Game Genie. Canada got it first because Nintendo attempted to block its release in the United States (and obviously weren't successful). Never used it with any games I hadn't beaten, but it was great fun messing around - especially with the most manipulative game of the bunch, SMB1.

I also have GB and SNES ones lying around but I never managed to do too much with those.

I have a few around here. NES is the only one in plain sight from my desk. Been quite some time since I've needed to use cheats.

I've never owned one or used one. Although I've used built-in cheating devices on emulators, but I only use those for shits and giggles, and only if I've already beaten a game start to finish several times (enough that I don't get any more enjoyment out of playing it through normally). I don't like cheating before I've beaten a game because it destroys the satisfaction I get from having done everything all by myself.

/☢/CAUTION/☢/

I had the choice of buying Blaster Master or this.

Guess what game was so hard at the time it made me want a Game Genie?

Also when I found emulation I got interested in it to mess up with the games, which in turn made me interested in hacking, so I'd have liked to own one earlier for that too.

I remember.

I wasn't lucky enough to actually own the physical device, but when playing Super Mario RPG on a SNES emulator I'd always use the cheat to play Final Fantasy music when winning a fight.

Besides that I didn't cheat much besides random Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64 cheats with the GameShark.

I still have a programmable GameShark that can play NES games with some work!

I never really heard of Game Genie until much later when I was looking up GameShark codes for things. Sure, we'd always beat a game normally first, and afterward came the cheatcode experimenting. We loved seeing the weird things that could be done with what seemed like random numbers. And yes, we used it to unlock some things that we considered extremely difficult (or in the case of SSSV, was actually impossible).

There are two things about cheating devices that I have learned (Cheat Codes work as well)

1- It spoils the game for me. I remember having a bad habit of always cheating on a videogame. So this is partly my fault; I am sure a lot of people share the same thing as I do.

2- It actually opens the game for me. Monster Rancher and Jade Cocoon were perfect examples of this. Whenever I would look online for Gameshark / Codebreaker codes: I always noticed certain items were in two digits, and higher quality items were always either two letters, or numbers higher than the last one. What about in between? I always got some funny results. (Monsters / Items not even in the game, Debug monsters, Missingno-like creatures, you name it). I guess you can say this was the early hacking phases of my life. With damn Gamesharks

if you have an old game genie and a copy of link's awakening (non-dx), put in code "7", hit start, and prepare to be amazed

For those unfortunate not to have this. Explain what I will be seeing.

My friend still owns his NES Game Genie. I remember back then when we started with Nintendo World Cup...

Accidental codes made the ball go FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAST

I never owned a cheating device, but I've seen the SNES variant. I've also seen gamesharks for GBC and N64.

My extent was using the cheat search feature in zsnes to try to break games. Later on when I learned how to use it for real, I used it for cheating. D: Now I tend not to cheat.

I never had one (only heard about it a bit), but I did mess around with it for a while in Nesticle and found random codes that messed up the levels in SMB1 (and other fun things) ... I think it's what got me to look for SMB2j and find a level editor, too

I had the NES and SNES ones. Had a good amount of those little update code booklet things, too. Didn't use them too much, but it was how I beat Contra.

Hardcore gamers beat Contra legitimately.

Real gamers use a Game Genie to beat Contra because... seriously now.

I think a lot of people use the infamous Konami Code to beat Contra

Speaking of Konami, has anyone played The Lone Ranger for NES? That had its own code, but the game was still ridiculously hard even with the code Hell, I had a hard time beating it with save-states
