...what would you recommend?

Preferrably something along the lines of an image, so that in the event it dies completely I can just extract the image to a new system and go from there.

From what I remember, Windows XP has that migration tool thing that creates an image like that (I think). I used the file it created as the boot disk file for my VM and created a perfect copy of the system. Though... I don't remember if it included the contents of My Documents and stuff...

I just stuff all my important stuff into a huge rar which I then set it to search for changed files and update from time to time. Only has to take forever the first time--the rest is rather quick.

Naturally, to restore it one would first format the drive, then use a livedisc or something to unzip all the files onto the new hard drive.

if it's in linux, you could create a .tar.7z to preserve ownership and permissions.

As far as specific backing up PROGRAMS I don't know.

I'd recommend a cloning/ghosting program. Here's a few:

Arconis TrueImage
Symantec Ghost

Hiren's Boot CD has both, if you happen to have that.

I used either Partimage or Clonezilla. (It's been a while. )

Whenever I back up my stuff, I just do a direct copy-and-paste from my computer to an external hard drive, then let it run while I'm not using the computer. Not the best solution, but at least I can guarantee that my files will be recoverable, as opposed to backup software.
