I'm Definitely Not An ArtistTM and I would like an easy-to-use image editor. I am writing a game for a class and have got to the point at which I can't code or test much without images. The GIMP confuses my poor brain Basically, something easy to use like Paint but with more features in terms of colours and image formats and such A zoom-in feature is a must.

Also, does anyone know what image format(s) I should use in order to be able to import the resulting graphics sheet into an Allegro game?

Edit: I can't afford expensive stuff like Photoshop so I would prefer freeware or at least shareware.

Looks like the Useful Freeware sticky doesn't have it listed in the first post, even though it was mentioned.
Anyways, try getting Paint.NET for
* More features in terms of color
* Multiple compatible image formats
* Up to 3200% zoom
* Freeness, dood!

I'm not an artist either, but I'd rather use it instead of Paint when I need to do something that isn't "Ctrl-V this Printed Screen and crop it rectangularly" or the like. At any rate, try it.

If you can get your hands on Fireworks CS3/4. That program is pretty easy to use once you get the hang of it. I find it a little more user friendly than photoshop. So yeah.

It's about $300 USD

But it's pretty worth it. If you would like to try it out. They offer a free trial.

Bitmap: Nah, I only make $90 in a typical week

Madman200: So that's basically a better Paint? I should try that out.

Paint Shop Pro 4

It's quite old (1997) and a whole 8 versions behind, but it's pretty much a better Paint as well:

- Shareware with a 30 day trial, but still fully functional after it expires
- Support for many image formats, including PNG and transparency (but not alpha)
- Zoom from 16x out to 16x in
- Basic pixel editing tools (what you'd expect from Paint)
- Resampling, color adjust, blur/sharpen, etc.
- Small (fits on a floppy) and fast, obviously
- Still runs in Windows 7

I've been using it for 11 years now

You can try mtPaint
More functionality than MS Paint, but not as complicated as Photoshop -- probably comparable to Paint Shop Pro

I second the recommendation of Fireworks, but even an earlier version like MX 2004 (the ones I use) or Fireworks 8 would be great. I don't think they sell those versions anymore, though, so...

Weighted Storage Cube Dispenser
Cake Slice
I'd recommend you get Fx 8. I have CS4, and a few things feel regressive... eh, it's a little clunkier than 8 was, but at the same time it has some rather redeeming features. Plus, there're educational discounts if you really want to play it on the straight and narrow. Cost me ~$150 CDN.

How exactly does The Gimp confuse you?

Also Photoshop is perfect for graphical design while PaintTool SAI is great for drawing art. Both cost money but you can pirate them, and yes, I'm not saying to buy these because Photoshop is FUCKING EXPENSIVE for a casual user to even think of buying and PaintTool SAI... well, you don't want to pay if you don't know if you can draw, right?

I'd recommend paint shop pro 7/8 or mtpaint. The non-Jasc Paint shop pros are just miserably bad and will silently break if they detect you've bootlegged it. I lost some work from that. D:

Paint Shop Pro 4 and IrfanView (for more exotic file formats and image adjustments) are pretty much the only two tools I ever use.
