Calculus is rather ridiculous after a while

Especially when you get into integration and you have to remember all kinds of very specialized formulas. Like if you're integrating 1/x, that's totally different from 1/x², which is totally different from 1/(x² + 1), and so on. As in, the formulas don't even remotely resemble each other.

1/(x² + 1) is just a special case of 1/x², really… and 1/x is the only exception to that rule (e.g. 1/x³ and 1/x⁴ and even x⁷ use the same rule as 1/x²). 1/x is an exception because using the power rule, ∫dx/x = 1/0, which makes no sense.

Calc I and II made a lot of sense to me. I mean, all the rules can be figured out with the difference quotient (differentiation) or summations (integration). Calc III was harder, but not because of the concepts—more because doing multivariable calculus by hand is a bit like digging postholes with a spoon.

I thought that for the 1/(x² + 1) thing you had to use the inverse tangent or something

It's been so long. For 1/x it's the ln |x| + C and for 1/x² it's -1/x + C, IIRC.
