Daily Cycle II ~ -2695
ShaddowK recently inspired me to make this.

Namely, how do you play though your games? What makes them "fun"?

Do you cheat to see the end, or do you play though it, never using a guide if you can't figure something out?

I will refrain from stating my opinion here for the time being.

It really depends. Phoenix Wright I figure everything out on my own. But Poke'mon, I just use the missingo trick. It really depends on wether I think my expirience would be better if I played normally or not.

For games with a plot that I find interesting, I tend to cheat a lot more... actually, the plot is really the main reason I find RPGs and that style of game fun, since I really hate leveling up...

On side-scrollers and that kind of game I tend to focus on playing it legitimately, though.

Oh my god, Kattwah's layout works!
--------------------------------

I never use a guide if I can help it - however, when I try to figure out a puzzle for three hours, I just give it and Ctrl+F to that section in a walkthrough so I don't spoil anything.

I mainly prefer challenging, long games. To me, the more gameplay I get out of a game, the more I enjoy it. If anyone has ever played Fable, they will know why I hated it so much

If I'm ultimately stuck, I'll glance at a strategy to get me through that part. Otherwise, on my own.

I also basically goof off a lot just to have fun. Find something different to kill an enemy with? Use it. A different route to a certain objective? Take it.

I try to make the most out of a game, so I use every opportune moment I can to have fun.

I play through the game normally until I beat the game. Once that happens, I start uses guides and see what I missed. Then, I try to beat the game 100%. I think I already said it in another thread but I'm a perfectionist who tries to get everything the game has to offer.

However, if a game is absurdly difficult, then I'll most likely lose interest in the game and never touch it again before achieving 100%. Yoshi's Island DS is a perfect example. The abysmal level design of the extra and secret levels made me lose interest quickly.

Talks too much

I prefer to hyperfocus on them, playing 8 hour marathon sessions in which I run through the game as fast as possible, pausing a bit to enjoy story and also destroy everything in my path. No FAQs used, ever, except for frustrating spots which stop me for about an hour straight.

I prefer games in which progress is continual, the game's structure evolves rather than repeating, and a long (but not insanely long) game which is rated for about 30-35 hours. (Twilight Princess, while I did it in only 30, felt like a chore towards the end. Similar feelings occurred with Metroid Prime 2, however it delighted me with its difficulty.)

I also like an emphasis on skill rather than pattern memorization. That way I can get maximum replay value out of it, should I feel up to it.

I just enjoy playing games. I don't like using guides ever since I spoiled Metroid Prime and Ocarina of Time. You can be sure that I won't spoil Metroid Prime 3 anymore than what is common knowledge before I play through the whole game, beat it, then get 100% and beat it again.

I play normally until the game starts to piss me off, then I cheat, use guides, or just don't play it anymore.

I like some degree of challenge and some sense of accomplishment from figuring things out for myself. However, I dislike gaming as a chore. I have limited time for it, and I don't want to waste said time banging my head on the game for too long. When I'm getting frustrated and annoyed, I'll look for help or go do something else.

In general, "Challenge but fairness" has become my idea of fun... If the controls are functional and responsive, if it's possible to avoid everything that comes at you, and if "possible" doesn't mean "if you're a Korean" then the game just seems to be fun.

I tend to have infinite patience with things like video games... if I can't figure something out, I use trial and error

So yeah... Challenge, and AI that doesn't have to cheat, in order to be fun. For example, Dead or Alive 4, or Soul Calibur 3 are not fun, because even on low settings, characters like Setsuka cheat, or the counterattack system is so difficult to use that it's basically impossible unless you're the computer with reflexes that no human (outside of Korea) could ever employ...

Big Bang Beat 1st Impression, Devil May Cry 3, or Godhand are fun because they're fair, despite being much more difficult to beginners. I want the computer's skill/AI to actually be good enough to defeat me, without the gameplay mechanics stacked against human opponents.

The overall mood of the game heavilly influences the ammount of fun I'm having too. Even the best game can be ruined if the graphics make my eyes bleed, or if the music makes my ears hurt. If graphics are terrible (such as FF6's world map) they can detract away from a perfect game, or if the music is fucking terrible (like E.V.O.) it can make everything about the game seem bad, and make me wish I was playing something else.

For the record, I don't hate either of those games, I just hate the world map graphics (mode 7 for the LOSE) and the music in EVO...

On the subject of infinite patience, I have, in one sitting, continued 34 times, in my efforts to defeat a boss, in a fighting game that was legitamately beating me, without their character being 1000 times more powerful than mine.

~~~~~
*sigh* oh, and I'm very sorry for insulting the hell out of every game that came up in that IRC chat... I was a little upset, and I felt like emulating my frustration. There's no excuse for my actions, and I take back everything I said about specific games. I love ActRaiser and the Megaman Zero series... (although Legend of Zelda 2 can suck on mah bawls...)
I don't enjoy stuff that for me is ridiculously difficult. Not merely challenging, mind you. But feats beyond the realm of comprehension IMO. Sephiroth in the two Kingdom Hearts games, nearly any level in Ninja Gaiden Xbox...
I'm not fond of items which need raw level grinding either. Getting Pokemon past about lv70 for example.
Playing a game that is well built, breath-taking storyline, has plenty of gametime and great replayability is a key factor to being a fun game (Does not mean that any other game isn't fun). Funny though, many RPG's fit this bill, I just find them too slow and I rarely play RPG's (MarioRPGs are an exception, along with any RPG that isn't OMG serious storyline business.)
Walkthroughs?
Depends.
MMORPG? I want to be the best, so I use a walkthrough every step of the way. (Hello WoW)
Any other game? Only when I am stuck for more than a half hour to three hours, and I only use it to progress past that one part (Say it's Phoenix Wright, I just figure out what to present next and then continue on my own). I used to use walkthroughs like they were water when I was very, very young, but it didn't really matter because games like Sonic and such were kind of hard to even get stuck in back then.
Multiplayer games like Smash Bros. and Counter Strike, I also use guides and such to be the best of my ability and try to be the best player. This doesn't always happen though, because as shown recently with Mario Strikers, I have not looked at one recommended team or used a "cheap" team, and I made my own (That is fairly normal and I don't spam things like hammers or other stupid moves) that simply wins by just kicking the ball around and scoring (It's funny, because so many people try every possible way to get around the goalie(Hello Toad and Daisy) to score a cheap goal, and this is the reason I beat them, because I don't try to act like a moron).
MMOs: Anymore, it's experimentation and building a character instead of trying to use the best possible setup. I used to aim to be the best, and I still try to make the most out of my builds, but taken too far it gets too much number crunching, and I don't like math. Even if I am pretty good at it. I also have a very hard time focusing on a single character, filling up three accounts on one RO server (27 characters total), and currently playing five characters frequently in City of Heroes/Villains with another two made.
RPGs: Generally get turned off by forced level grinding. This seems very odd when you consider that I play MMORPGs, but... anyway, given the choice between glitching or cheating my way through a few extra levels (no further than I should; if I'm at 12 and should be at 19 to have a chance against a boss, I stop at 18 or 19 rather than going for 25). In those that have more room for character customization, such as Morrowind and FFT, I almost never intentionally use an optimal character setup. I also sometimes recreate characters from other games...
Cheating: If it's to unlock things, I'm willing to cheat - in R-Type Final, I used Invincibility to get past stage 6.0, F-B, 6.2, F-C, and the boss of 3.5 in order to unlock all the ships. More options to play with = more fun for me.
Competitive: I aim to do the best I can without consulting detailed build guides, resorting to cheap tricks (against humans; AI can be cheaped to death all day long for all I care), abusing overpowered abilities, or doing anything that makes the game less enjoyable to me (see: wavedashing in SSBM, snaking in MKDS). Fun first, winning if it doesn't interfere.
100% completion: Well, I did it in SMW... and outside of racing games, I believe that might just be all. Eventually aiming for perfect completion gets repetitive to me, and therefore not fun.
