After getting my hands on a Basic Stamp II yesterday in engineering class, I just had to try this...

I'm pretty sure he managed to get the display to detect when the controller buttons were pressed?

Pretty cool I guess.

Damn, that reminds me that I still need to fix my one SNES controller with the broken Start and Select buttons. Like, the buttons themselves, not the circuit board. And then find new screws the exact same type to screw back in, since all of them are now fubar.

But I did open up my PSX yesterday. I wanted to take a picture of the board, but I got a little scared trying to take off the plate, gave up, put everytihing back together, and did an image search on Google. The only image of a PSX board, and there's terrible lens glare in one corner. X(

I've opened up my NES before. Just to try to fix it. Didn't work.

Since I do have an extra NES now, I want to try to do something with the broken one. Not sure what yet.

I had a 3rd-party NES controller which would pause the game at random sometimes That was annoying, but it was my only controller with turbo buttons, so sometimes I put up with it.

Heh, I actually fixed my Gamecube controller a month or two ago. You know how that over time, you start losing control with the control stick? Well, I didn't want to go out and buy a new one, so I decided to take it apart and clean it there. Since I don't have a tri-wing, I had to use a hairpin to get the screws out. When I cleaned it and put it back together (with black rubber bands for ease until I get around to buying a screwdriver for it) the controller was working extremely well, and I've yet to have characters move by themselves or menus go through themselves!

I should really get the gamebit while I'm at it, but I have a budget right now, so I can't buy it now. Christmas gift? ;D

How hard would this be for me to do if I never tried to open an electronic device before? I have good vision and can sometimes hold steady, but have no experience. My dad has a bit of poor vision so he only works with a light, but he seems to know what it is that he's doing when he works on devices, except for that one time when he tried to repair a crappy 3rd-party controller(A-button broke quickly) the R-button was accidentally misplaced to where you couldn't press it(Like A Rock). (Among all that however, he CAN fix one of our vehicles when he puts his mind to it.)

lol... You're playing the F-Zero Rainbow Road... Also, awesome. Even if it's a simple device, it's cool that you got it to recognize an SNES controller of all things.

Well, the nice thing is it means that we get 12 buttons for the price of 3 pins (out of 16 available to us), which is great. Plus, it only takes up 2 bytes of RAM on the controller to store the 12 pins and loop variable, out of 24 bytes available. And of course, outside of the controller read loop, we can use the 4 of those bits that make up the loop counter for anything else.

I googled the Basic Stamp after watching that video and it seems like a pretty nifty device. Given what I'm currently studying (Comp sci and EE) this thing (plus a carrier board, naturally) looks pretty appealing for dicking-around purposes (which means seeing what kinds of bizarre shit i can do with USB/serial peripherals)

DealExtreme has triwings. For $0.85 and free shipping, you really can’t go wrong.

So the SNES controller is low-active?

Yes. The SNES internally has a pull-down on the pins, and there are four extra buttons not used in the 16 bits the SNES reads out of the controller. This is how games could detect a controller wasn't plugged in; if these four buttons were pressed, there was no controller.
