I did that too, but I was the ripe old age of 8

I've had so many computers:
- Commodore 64
- Tandy 1000 EX
- Packard Bell, some 386 or other
- Off-brand 486
- Off-brand Pentium I
- Compaq Presario something or other
- Emachine
- Another Emachine
- Another Compaq

Yeah, usually I go for the cheap stuff, as do my parents

We got our cousins' old Mitsubishi 386 when they upgraded, back around 1992 or so. It was a pretty basic system, as I recall, with a VGA card and noisy, error-riddled hard drive. It had some neat shareware games on it, though, as well as an awesome drawing program called Dr. HALO. I'd spend hours doodling all kinds of stuff in that program.

In a way, the soul of that first computer still lives on, as we usually just copied all the data and programs from one computer to the next every time we upgraded. It currently resides in a 412MHz K6-III system with 192MB of RAM, acting as a file server. The Windows 98 folder still has Windows 3.1 programs and DLL files from 1992 in it!

A fucking terrible and broken 286 that had its HD die mere days or weeks after we got it so my mother wouldn't trust me with computers until 2004!

First GOOD comp... a 486 with 36MB of RAM and Win95. Good lord, so much ZC shit on there.

Its HD is still alive, I think ,but plugging a monitor into it doesn't seem to work anymore

My dad had some old crappy computer that I can hardly remember.

MY first computer I built myself. Pentium 4 at 3.2 GHz, 512 MB of ram, 120 GB HD, DVD Drive, Windows XP, yea...

The only changes it has gone through since I built it many years ago is that the ram has grown to 768 MB.

Also, for the DVD drive I need to hit the button over and over again for about a minute to get the tray to come out. This doesn't happen if there was already a disk inside, it just pops out right away.

I don't even know how many times I've backed up and formated this thing... So much that it's really easy.

Weighted Storage Cube Dispenser
Cake Slice
Pentium 200Mhz w/ 64MBytes RAM and a 6GByte hard drive. Built it in the summer after grade 7 at a university course.

I still have it, and it still works, though it's now a 17GByte HDD, 96MBytes RAM, Creative Soundblaster Live! 24-bit, and a Radeon VE w/ DVI and composite video out in addition to VGA.

The first de facto one was a Pentium 3 500Mhz on Win98. I think 8GB hard drive. Not sure about RAM.
A pain to upgrade. Not only was the CPU slot-1, it had no AGP. I decided to not really bother. Most major addition was a better PCI video card. Might've had 2000 or even XP at the very end, don't remember if so.

Played a lot of games on C64 and a 60Mhz Pentium before that. Oh man, DOS+Win3x was legendary in my book. Easily the PC's greatest era.

Long story short, I got a photo that has my old computer in the background.

So, my first PC was a Packard Bell.

Macintosh LC II
Pentium 200MHz (not a great view but still has all the parts)

Our first computer?

Windows 98 (first edition), 300mhz Celeron, 32MB RAM, 3GB hard drive. We got it for Christmas 1998 when I was 4. I loved that thing. I would mess around with it constantly and I learned as much about it as I could.

Later on it was upgraded to a 700mhz Celeron, 96MB RAM, 40GB hard drive. It got REALLY clogged up and had so many things installed on it that it was unbelievable. It still works, surprisingly enough! It just hasn't been used for a few years.

As for -my- first computer.. I got this for my birthday in 2003. It was a Toshiba laptop with a 2.2ghz Celeron processor (I think?), 256mb RAM, 40gb hard drive and Windows XP.

It feels weird to see just how much things have advanced in 10 years. Now there are phones which are far more capable than computers from just a decade ago. It's pretty amazing.

Our first computer looked nearly identical to this.

It ran System 7. It had ClarisWorks 4. It was glorious.

My first computer was an old DOS computer with a 16 MB VooDoo graphics card.

It was an Intel 150Mhz processor, 16 MB VooDoo graphics (Played Hexplore rather well), and had only 16 MB of RAM.

I always played Duke Nukem, Hexplore, Command and Conquer, and Civilization. I forget the model and brand (I believe it was custom built by my grandfather)

Also don't ask what the OS was. I am not 100% sure what it was.

And if anyone is confused by This version of Hexplore you will be wrong. The Hexplore I am talking about is an old MUD that came out in 1992. The version that is on Youtube is the visual representation of it.

Hexplore in the video is an AMAZING game. Play it if you can find it.

I'd say computers evolved more in 1990-1999 than 2000-2009 (or at least 2003-2009) ... they went from 386's to Pentium III's (a few dozen times more powerful, almost 1000x the disk space), while introducing CD-ROM and (widespread) Internet

But handhelds definitely followed ... other than cellphones, just look at the difference between the GameBoy Advance and PSP (only 3 years apart, and almost like a jump from SNES to PlayStation 2)

My first computer back in the day was an old NEC. Not much can be remembered about it's specs since at that time I was only starting with computers, but I'd say that it at least had 256MB ram, it was pretty much a Christmas present from both my parents and our aunt and uncle.

It ran Windows 98 SE at the time, at a resolution at 640x480 on a fairly large TTY(?) monitor. Since I was about 10 at the time, my little brother and myself were heavily restricted in what we could do with it. For instance, we couldn't even move the icons around.

Eventually, I was able to do more on it (including browsing the Internet, changing the wallpaper, and then finally changing themes and such around.) I also managed to bump the resolution up to 800x600 and then eventually 1024x768. Then after that, we got a new Windows XP machine around 2003? that failed about two years after getting it-- but I won't get into that now. :p Eventually, we had Windows 2000 installed on the NEC and sold it.

My first computer was a Macintosh Performa from 1993, and it lasted me five years... I finally upgraded to an HP Pavilion then, which I had for eight years o_O

My Performa and old HP Pavilion still work today, although I had to change the CMOS battery in the HP Pavilion since it died from being unused...

I played a lot of old Mac games back in the day, and kept a journal on it for years, which continued well into the HP Pavilion era o_O

HEY CAN YOU SEE ME
Earliest I remember was in about 1986, and it was an Amstrad.

Best I can determine is that it was a Amstrad PC-1512.

  • Ours had two 5 1/4" floppy disks
  • NO HARD DRIVE
  • Ran at a whopping Intel 8086 @ 8 MHz
  • CGA display, a whole 16 colours at 640x200
  • Loud bleepy bloopy PC speaker
  • A MOUSE
  • A mega-massive 512K of RAM

Everything was run from four very floppy disks, a red, yellow, green, and blue one. And we had all the amazing software of the magical world:

  • Microsoft MS DOS 3.2 Operating System
  • Digital Research GEM (Graphics Environment Manager) plus GEM Desktop
  • Digital Research GEM Paint
  • Digital Research DOS Plus (runs MS DOS and CP/M-86 Applications)
  • GEM based Locomotive BASIC 2

It was aaaamaaaaaaaaaazing. OK, fine, I just spent my time in GEM Paint, BASIC and playing the impossibly-difficult (for a five year old) Prince of Persia.
