last night I decided to start dicking around in hammer, and I made a pretty basic flatgrass clone (it's smaller and far uglier, natch.)
Then I find that I can crash hammer by trying to carve two surfaces into each other! Hooray! :specialed:×∞
To add to that, it took me about two hours to figure out why my map was just crashing the game. Turns out I was using the wrong game to test. Oops. :specialed: ∞____________________ JOIN #PROG YOU JERKS.

This.
...well actually, I believe Hammer is some sort of map editor. But I have no idea.

I want to use Hammer more, but Source doesn't work on this useless laptop.

I am. This thing isn't powerful enough to handle it, and it wouldn't be right for me to buy another laptop just to play Source games on it.

You overestimate the power of my laptop, good sir.

Hammer is pretty neat, actually. I wasn't expecting it to be that simple to figure out, but I've also made a few (very) simple maps with it.

Runs fine for me in CrossOver, but that uses wine and has DirectX support. If you're running it in a virtual machine, there's no guarantee that it will work, but my MacBook Pro is older than yours and it is most definitely powerful enough to handle it.
Out of curiosity, I'm going to see if it will run in VirtualBox. Probably not since VB doesn't support DirectX terribly well yet (thus things that require WDDM like Aero in Vista or Windows 7 won't work) but I have had some success with some older games.
I am downloading HL2: DM to my virtual machine now to test.
edit: I am not exactly sure why you hate your MacBook Pro so much, other than having some hardware problems, but I know of some people that would kill to have one. It's a perfectly good machine, and complaining endlessly about it when you don't know how to use it, like it's the machine's fault, is not going to do any good.

Given the amount of problems he's had with it (such as his wireless randomly not working or otherwise breaking for no reason, various programs ceasing to function or not functioning at all, etc, etc, etc) I would definitely also be upset that my $RAPE computer is not functioning.
as opposed to me but I spent $900 for a laptop that has lasted me 3 years and all kinds of things so you know
also: when all you have is a hammer...

I'm very well capable of operating this machine. I'm pretty sure crashing when it tries to wake up from sleep, crashing when it tries to shut down, crashing when it tries to boot up, forgetting to load thumbnails when it boots, forgetting to load the entire desktop when it boots, and programs crashing spontaneously have nothing to do with my ability to use it. Nor am I to be blamed for the internal fan ceasing to function two weeks after buying it.
With the money I had to spend on this thing, I could have bought a laptop for myself, my brother, and my mother, all with twice the specs and a touchscreen. I'd trade it in if the university didn't keep insisting that it is necessary for me to have.
Please, let's not derail this topic anymore. Even if my machine was able to run any of the games, it would overheat so much that it would spontaneously shut down.

cool
... but it's not a Mac vs. PC debate here, it's whether or not his could run Hammer, and it could, easily, if it was working properly (apologies for earlier remark.)
... it's like ... if it's having problems, sell the damn thing, Macs have great resale value, put the money toward a PC.
