What was the first computer you or your family has ever had?

My dad had a Commodore VIC-20 in 1983 or so, before I was even born It had 5 KB of RAM or some such. No hard drive, just floppy disks and cassette tapes for storage. Later, he upgraded to a Commodore 64, which was probably the first computer I ever used.

We started pretty late with a top of the line™ Intel Pentium III 500 MHz and 64 MB RAM and an amazing 8 GB hard drive. And a Riva 128 graphics card.

Our family's first computer was an old Compaq that ran Windows 3.1! Ah, fun times, bunch of cool DOS games.

Macintosh LC II (September 1992)
- 68030 at 16MHz
- 4MB RAM
- 75MB disk space
- 12" screen, 512x384 16bit
- MacOS 7.0.1
- 1.4MB floppy drive
- No CD-ROM or modem

I was 9 at the time, and now it's long dead, but I've had a good time with it while it lasted (5-6 years)

I don't even remember what my first computer was like--I don't have it anymore. Literally all I remember about it is that it was running Windows 3.11. Little old 3-year-old me obviously didn't care much about computer specs.

A Mac Plus. 8Mhz Motorola 68000, 4MB RAM, external 80MB hard disk, also read 800k floppies. 9" bitmapped display.

I loved that thing when I was growing up, even though it was so horribly slow.

A Compaq that ran Windows 98 and had an 800x600 monitor. Couldn't really tell you much about it because I had it so long ago. I made the first five KvSG strips on it.

The Tandy 1000 EX. My dad got it in the '80's (before I was born), and aI actually salvaged it from the garage and now it's in my room, ready for when I want to play some old games on it.

The Apple 1. It's too bad that fell off the desk and broke, it would probably be worth a lot nowadays.

I don't know exactly what it was, but the first family PC we had ran on DOS.

Also, my dad had SNES emulators on his own PC later. XD
Maybe that's what got me into emulation!

I know he said something about having a commodore befor, but I would not know.

Macintosh Power PC 6221? I think, purchased in either 1993 or 1994.

- 8MB RAM (I remember this was top of the line back then) later upgraded to 40MB
- 256MB Hard drive
- ISP: E*World (I remember this kicked ass) and later on, AOL. Any AOL version higher than 3.0 was too big to install on our hard drive
- MacOS 7.5.3
- 1.4MB floppy drive
- 1 CD-ROM drive

I loved this thing, and especially loved the games I ran on it. Unfortunately, it's long dead now. This probably wasn't helped by the fact that my dad started storing it in his workshop downstairs amidst all of the sawdust from his carpentry work

Oh well, it was getting in pretty bad shape even before we put it in storage. I still have most of the CD-ROMS and floppies for it. I just don't have anything that will run them. I hold onto them out of hope and nostalgia

Paulguy's Post configuration
Apple //e with the duodisk drive and green monitor. I was maybe 3 or 4 and I only had some lame math game and didn't have a manual so I didn't know it had a BASIC interpreter, not that I would've done much with it at 4.

My first x86 computer was a 33Mhz 386/SX with I think either 4 or 8MB of RAM, 1.44MB floppy drive and this neat CDROM drive that had a spring loaded tray mechanism that you pushed in to lock and unlock, then pulled out with your hand. We need to bring these back; no more shoddy motor driven drive trays that jam. It ran Windows 3.1 and DOS but I didn't know the DOS command line very much until I was 8 when we had our next computer.

ZEOS 386 SX with... 4 MB memory? I'm not quite sure, but it sucked, that was for sure.

Had about 100-200 MB hard drive and Windows 3.1.

It was very oldschool, but all I got out of it were nonsensical powerpoint presentations and some silly PAINT images I drew as a 7-8 year old kid.

Unless they're 800k floppies, a Macintosh emulator like Basilisk II (680x0) or SheepShaver (PowerPC) should do just fine, that's how I got about half of my stuff back since I had a lot of it on floppies

Also, MacOS 7.5.3 came out in 1995, so either you got it a bit later or had 7.1.2 (or whichever added PowerPC support) ... and while 8MB RAM was great in 1992-1993, it wasn't that much a few years later

And while I'm here, I might as well list my first PC (and second computer), from December 1997:

- Pentium-MMX 200MHz
- 32MB RAM (upgraded to 64MB)
- 4GB disk space
- Windows 95 (98)
- ATI Xpert@Play with 4MB video, up to 1280x1024 32bit
- 17" screen (now on another computer)
- 24x CD-ROM drive (52x)
+ 24x4x4x writer
+ 56k modem and Ethernet port

That one still works after 11 years, too

My first computer was a Packard Bell 486 in the early 90s running Win 3.11, then we upgraded to 95 a year or two later.

We also had a Tandy laptop with no battery, no hard drive, and a monochrome display. That thing was rad.

486/25 with 4 MB (later upgraded to 12 MB) of RAM and a 120 MB hard drive.

It could run Doom! And it could emulate NES/GB games. And it could emulate SNES games at 4 FPS.

While I don't really know the specs, my first computer was running Windows 98 with an 8GB hard-drive and I think an Intel Celeron Processor.

I had a lot of fun with the thing, playing games and stuff. I still have it, but it's all taken apart and I replaced Windows 98 with XP.

Oh, that would be my second computer. Celeron 300 with 64 MB of RAM and a 6 GB HD.

...I ended up putting XP onto that poor thing. XD
