Despite mostly living in "pop" areas, I pretty much always knew what "soda" was, but the reverse doesn't seem to hold true very much

I did live in NJ for a while though. That was "soda"-land, but my parents still called it "pop" at home. I think I asked for "pop" at someone else's house and they got confused or something.

Here's a picture for you Americans: http://popvssoda.com:2998/countystats/total-county.html

Most people in my area (Southwestern Ontario) say "pop."

IIRC, in Germany it was called "Limonade", which confused me for a while because I thought it was some kind of lemonade

iirc that drink is very bitter and tastes a little like tonic water.

Which reminds me, there are also people out there who call drinks like this Tonic. Or more specifically: Genatonic.

"Tonic" makes me think of potions in some RPGs (like SNES Chrono Trigger), and also the word "toxic". I think it's used for soft drinks in the Boston area.

Tonic water? Isn't that just soda water?

Like that carbonated water stuff? I'm not a huge fan of that, but I drink it on occasion.

It tastes pretty good. But it's one of those drinks you have to have a taste for. So at first it might taste awful, but in the end if you keep drinking it. It's quite refreshing.

Pop, sometimes the brand name when needed.

Also, I hate club soda, but like tonic water. Club Soda is too salty.

Do people seriously say "coke" to refer to any kind of soda even if it's not actually cola?

I live in the south where this supposedly happens all the time but I don't think I have ever witnessed this bizarre phenomenon before

It's likely because so many people just have coke that they simply refer to all soda as such.

My mother calls all cereals "Cheerios". It astounds me.

I call soda... well, "soda".
I usually drink Diet Pepsi (Coke goes flat too quickly!), but I love root beer. It's the best stuff ever (as far as I've experienced). I've been meaning to try birch beer too.

According to that, I live coke land, yet I've never heard anybody refer to anything other than Coca-Cola as "coke." In fact, for the most part, everybody just calls it "soda", even though there's apparently only one county in our state that refers to it as "soda" more often than anything else.

Also, those small, but apparently dedicated patches of "other" perplex me. Why are they so far from each other? Why do the surrounding counties seem unaffected? What is "other", anyway; are those the mysterious areas where they call it "tonic?"
Granted, I'm already pretty skeptical about how accurate this thing is, but it still seems pretty odd to me.

I call it soda, but I've heard people call it pop.

According to the map, pop is the more popular term here (no pun intended).
